Traffic Notes

The intersection of Union and University Streets will be closed all of this week to finish installation of a scramble crossing.  It will allow people to cross the intersection in whatever direction they want to.

The 130 thousand dollar project is aimed at increasing safety and reducing delays at the busy intersection.

The LaSalle Causeway will be closed all day tomorrow and all of Wednesday.

Kingston Transit will be using Montreal Street, the 401 and Highway 15 to get to Kingston east.

Spill

Birchwood Drive at Cataraqui Woods Public School was closed for about two hours Saturday morning after a chemical spill.

Propylene glycol leaked onto the parking lot and spread to the street.

Kingston Fire and Rescue identified the chemical and called in a private company to clean up the spill.

Bedford – Court

Internet sexual predator Mark Bedford spent the weekend at his parent’s home in Kingston after being set free on strict bail conditions.

Bedford has finished serving his sentence and Kingston Police have requested he be placed under special restrictions with a two year peace bond.

That’s why he was released on bail.

Bedford will be back in court tomorrow to fight the peace bond request.

Food Plant Announcement

The Kingston Economic Development Corporation says it expects more employment opportunities to develop with the announcement a Portuguese food processor will set up shop in Kingston.

Frulact will open its first North American plant and Research and Development Centre in Kingston.  It will start construction on 15 acres of property in the Cataraqui Estates Business Park in the city’s west end later this year.  Approximately 50 employees will be hired.

Loyalist – Contract Negotiations

Contract negotiations are set to resume tomorrow between the Canadian Union of Public Employees and Loyalist Township. Both sides agreed to hold off on a lockout or strike.  A media blackout is in place but the main stumbling block in the talks is the township’s demand to be able to call in workers whenever it wants.
