Military Training

A new military training facility officially opens in Kingston’s east end today.

A company from Ottawa will provide simulated training to members of the military.

The ADGA Training and Simulation Engineering Centre on Discovery Avenue features a computer-based Interactive Crew Gunnery System developed for crews of armored vehicles, a radio procedure simulator, and a simulator that recreates civilian vehicular and pedestrian traffic behavior.

Chlorine – West End Water

Residents in west end Kingston may notice a stronger odor and taste of chlorine in their tap water.  Utilities Kingston says a water main valve failed when it was working on a new connection at the Point Pleasant Water Treatment Facility.  It has increased the level of chlorine as a precautionary measure.

It says the water is still safe.

Domestic Violence

A 23 year old Kingston man is facing multiple charges following a nasty case of domestic violence.

Police say a woman was punched in the jaw and her residence on Montreal Street was damaged shortly after midnight on Wednesday.  A second residence owned by the woman was also heavy damaged and the woman’s car was damaged.

A news release from Kingston Police says the suspect fought with officers when he was arrested and cut his bare feet on broken glass.  He was taken to hospital for treatment and then transferred to a police cell on charges of domestic assault, assaulting a peace officer, one count of Mischief over $5,000 for damaging property and two counts of Mischief under $5,000.

Woman Sentenced – Two Robberies

A 34 year old Kingston woman is going to prison for five years after admitting to robbing two women and assaulting them…one with a hammer…the other with a bat.

Tara Scott admitted in court she is addicted to crystal meth and heroin.

The robberies took place following break-ins at two residences in early February.  Police issued warrants for the arrest of four other people following the robberies.  All four have since been arrested.

Assault – Tenant Charged

The Kingston Police Emergency Response Team was called into action after a tenant told his landlord he had a shotgun when he was confronted with an eviction notice.

Police says the man hadn’t paid rent for a residence on Montreal Street and the landlord had been assaulted during an earlier confrontation.

A 50 year old Kingston was arrested around 5:30 Tuesday afternoon.  He’s been charged with Assault, Uttering Threats to Cause Death and Criminal Harassment.

Sleepless Goat – Closing

The news spread like wildfire on social media after Kingston’s Sleepless Goat announced on its Facebook page it is closing.  The downtown Princess Street cafe has been a meeting place for people for the past 24 years.

It is owned and operated as a cooperative and has runs into financial trouble.

It hasn’t been able to pay bills and wasn’t able to afford to renew its liquor license.

A final farewell party is being held at The Goat starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

History File

From Tony’s today in history file…the founding of Queen’s University in Kingston and Alexander Graham Bell’s first phone call.

Queen’s University was founded in Kingston on March 10th, 1842.

And on March 10th 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made that historic call in Boston telling his assistant, “Come here, Watson. I need you.”
