Prince’s landmark film (and album) Purple Rain will be adapted for the stage, 40 years after its release. The production is based on the movie’s 1984 screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, and is being helmed by Broadway up-and-comers Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Appropriate) and Lileana Blain-Cruz (Skin Of Our Teeth). Additional details will be announced at a later date. The film, which stars Prince in his acting debut, follows The Kid, an aspiring musician in the Minneapolis club scene with a complicated home life who falls in love, and tangles with musical rivals while reinventing pop music. It grossed close to $100 million at the worldwide box office and won the Oscar for Best Original Score.
