There’s no denying that spiders are either fiercely loved or strongly hated, but we can both agree that they are very Rock n’ Roll. These eight-legged-mini-monsters can strike fear in the toughest of people, demanding respect as a king among creepy crawlies. Which makes the music found in their webs by scientists all the more eerily appropriate.

A team of scientists lead by Markus Buehler, who holds a postdoctoral degree in material science, wanted to experiment with Charlotte’s web. Alongside his colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), they presented their findings at the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) spring meeting this week.

Buehler explained, “The spider lives in an environment of vibrating strings, they don’t see very well, so they sense their world through vibrations, which have different frequencies…” which left open the possibility that spider webs “could be a new source for musical inspiration that is very different from the usual human experience.” BOY IS IT EVER!

It’s not by any means a symphony of beautiful music, but it’s certainly the kind of “music” a spider would make. Check out the spooky spider music below!
