Huck Sentenced

A former teacher and businessman from Rockport has been sentenced to seven years in jail for sexually assaulting boys and young men.

76-year-old Ron Huck was sentenced yesterday by a judge in Brockville.

Huck had been found guilty of 11 sex related crimes in July.

The crimes took place between 1964 and 2007 and involved seven male victims. Five of the victims were under the age of 18.

 

Rockin’ the Big House

The United Way says the Rockin’ the Big House concert at Kingston Penitentiary grossed 365,000 dollars. United Way President and CEO Bhavana Varma says once they deduct hard costs the concert should provide the agency with 200 thousand dollars for youth homelessness initiatives.

The United Way KFLA says over 3,000 people attended the show.

 

Lockdown

Inmates in the maximum security unit at Collins Bay Institution have been locked in their cells while staff conducts an exceptional search.  The Correctional Service says a lockdown was put in play on Wednesday.

Visits have been suspended until the search is completed.

 

Memorial Ride and Run

The 19th Canadian Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Ride will arrive in Kingston today.

The Ride will conclude tomorrow at the Canadian Peace Officers Memorial in Ottawa.

Kingston Police officers wearing jerseys with the names of five officers who have died on duty in Kingston will take part in the ride.  Constable Fil Wisniak of Kingston Police has been with the ride since it started.

It is expected to arrive in Kingston around 11:15 this morning and will be making a stop at Fort Henry Hill.

 

The National Peace Officer Memorial Run is also taking place.  It involves 200 runners and is expected to arrive in Kingston around noon today. Runners will continue east through Gananoque to Brockville this afternoon.

 

Open Farms – Award

The Open Farms in Frontenac event on September 8th has won a national award.

Open Farms received the Economic Developers Association of Canada’s 2019 Marketing Canada Award for Best Event at the organizations conference in Edmonton.

The second annual Open Farms in Frontenac saw thousands of visitors explore 10 local farms in the County of Frontenac and the City of Kingston.

 

Curling Club Anniversary

The Royal Kingston Curling Club is celebrating 200 years of curling starting today.

A gala dinner is being held tonight at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre featuring Canadian curling greats Russ Howard and Cheryl Bernard.

Howard and Bernard will be doing some coaching work at the club tomorrow.

The Royal Kingston Curling club was founded in 1820.

 

Coffee with a Cop

Coffee with a Cop will involve a horse in Kingston today.

Constable Sarah Groenewegen and her horse Murney from the Kingston Police Mounted Unit will be at the Seniors Centre on Francis Street from 10am to noon today for coffee and conversation.
