Gallienne – Sentencing

 

The man who sexually assaulted more than a dozen choir boys in Kingston has been convicted of another assault that took place in the 1980’s.

74 year old John Gallienne was found guilty of two charges of sexual assault and one of gross indecency against a person between January of 1985 and September of 1987.

He didn’t speak in court – but the victim impact statement spoke about how the abuse has ruined his life.

Gallienne was sentenced to two years of probation….the judge saying it would not profit society to put him in jail again.

 

Robbery – Arrest

 

A 43 year old man has been charged with robbing a convenience store on Division Street.

A man got away with a small amount of cash after approaching the clerk with a knife at approximately 3:30 on Tuesday morning.  Police say they were able to identify the man from security video and arrested him Wednesday afternoon walking in the area of Patrick and Pine Streets.  He has been charged with robbery and possession of a controlled substance…methamphetamine.

 

Homelessness

 

Some interesting facts have come out of the 2018 count of homeless people in the city of Kingston and Frontenac County.

The survey found 151 homeless people in Kingston and 61 homeless people in Frontenac County.

Approximately 80% of the homeless people who were surveyed self-identified as experiencing a mental health issue.

Women made up half of the number of homeless people…twice the average for Canada.

Youth made up about 25% of the homeless in Kingston and Frontenac County.

 

Remembrance Day

 

Remembrance Day ceremonies are taking on a bit more importance this year with the 100th anniversary of the end of the 1st World War.

It is commemorated on the 11th of November each year, and marks the end of World War I in 1918.

Students will attending Remembrance Day ceremonies at schools today and some will be attending an annual ceremony at Cataraqui Cemetery where there are approximately 900 graves of soldiers.

The city of Kingston’s ceremony takes place on Sunday at the Cross of Sacrifice at the foot of Barrie Street.

 

Gananoque – Pot Rules

 

Gananoque is going to ban smoking cannabis in public places.

Gananoque Town Council has given preliminary approval to a bylaw that will put cannabis under the same rules as alcohol.  It will prohibit smoking or vaping in any public place…effectively putting pot smokers behind closed doors or on their own property.

The bylaw was recommended by Gananoque Police Chief Garry Hull and the town council is expected to approve it at a meeting on November 20th.
