Corrections – Assault – Collins Bay

The Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad and the Correctional Service are investigating an assault on two staff members in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

A news release from the Correctional Service says the two staff members were evaluated and treated at an outside hospital following the assault at about 10:45 p.m. on Wednesday.

It says the assailants have been identified and appropriate actions will be taken.

 

Sexual Assault

An 18 year old Kingston man has been charged with sexually assaulting two 13 year old girls and drugging one of them.  Kingston Police say they began in investigation into the 18 year olds relationship with a 13 year old girl on September 6th.  He has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in that case.  During the investigation police say they found out about another 13 year old girl he was involved with before turning 18.  He has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and sexual interference. Police have also charged him with administering a noxious substance and sexually assaulting that girl after he turned 18.

He was arrested on October 10th.

 

Random Attack

Kingston Police say a man was attacked by a stranger on October 4th while the man was walking on Montreal Street.  He was attacked and punched in the face.  The incident happened on the same day a woman was punched while waiting at a bus shelter in the same area.

A 47 year old man was arrested on Monday and has been charged with assault.

 

Maclean’s Rankings

Queen’s placed fifth among Canada’s 15 medical-doctoral universities in the 2019 Maclean’s university rankings released on Thursday.  McGill and the University of Toronto tied for first place followed by UBC and McMaster.

The ranking features universities that have medical schools.  Queen’s ranked second in student satisfaction and faculty awards and fourth in student awards, library expenses, and scholarships and bursaries.

 

New Funding

Researchers at Queen’s University are getting more than $15.5 million dollars in funding from the federal government’s Discovery Grants.  The funding is going to more than 70 faculty members and student across various disciplines at Queen’s.  The university is calling it an historic investment and says it will mean researchers will have the resources and tools to tackle questions of critical importance to Canada from food safety to protecting the nation’s coastal waters.

 

Ontario – Beer Tax

It may be another indication beer and wine will soon be on sale at corner stores in Ontario.

The Ontario government is cancelling a scheduled three cent a litre increase in the provincial beer tax that was set to kick in next month.  It says it’s stopping the increase that was set to go into effect Nov. 1 as it reviews the province’s approach to beer and wine sales, including the possible expansion of sales into corner and big box stores.

 

Advance Voting

Advance voting for the municipal election in Kingston takes place tomorrow and Internet voting opens at 10am tomorrow.  Advance voting in person runs from 10 am to 8 pm at various locations in Kingston’s 12 electoral districts.  People will be voting for mayor, district councillors and school board trustees.  There is also a referendum question on the ballot asking if you are in favour of using Ranked Ballot Voting to elect the Mayor and District Councillors.

While advance voting in person only takes place on Saturday…Internet voting is open until 8pm on election day…October 22nd.

Street Closure – Works Garage

Work begins today on the city’s new 24.5 million dollar fleet maintenance garage.

Division Street will be closed from Barbara Avenue to Railway Street from 5:30 this afternoon until 11:30 Sunday night to accommodate the work.

The new fleet maintenance garage will replace the current facility that’s 70 years old.

 

Chretien Visit

Former Prime Minister Jean Chretien will be visiting Kingston later this month to promote his new book…My Stories, My Times.  Kingston WritersFest is presenting the session with Chretien on Sunday, October 27th.  Tickets are 35 dollars in advance.

The man known as…the little guy from Shawinigan…was Prime Minister from 1993 to 2003.
