Correctional Service – No Cuffs Standard

The Correctional Service says inmates in segregation will not be handcuffed unless they are deemed as being a risk when they are moved inside prisons.  The union representing correctional officers says inmates should be have their hands cuffed behind their backs after an officer at Millhaven Institution suffered a serious injury last week.  The officer was punched by an inmate who had been in segregation.  He suffered a serious cut to his face and lost a tooth in the attack.

 

Gananoque – Caregiver – Theft

Gananoque Police have charged a 47 year old woman with stealing money from a person in her care.

The woman had been providing health care to a disabled client.

She has been charged with making withdrawals and purchases of over $2,000 with the person’s bank card.

 

Drug Raids

The OPP and Kingston Police were involved in three drug raids on Wednesday.  Two loaded guns, hash and ecstasy were seized at a home on Fairhaven Lane in South Frontenac.  47 year old Mark Silva and 46 year old Wendy Wood face charges.

47 year old James Fitzgerald of Kingston is facing a charge of possession after a search warrant was executed on Conservatory Lane in Kingston.  No charges were laid following the execution of a search warrant in Loyalist Township.

 

United Way Update

The United Way campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has hit 33% of its goal.  The total raised so far just shy of 1.5 million dollars.  The goal this year is $3,456,000.

 

A group of volunteers will be getting a first-hand look at where United Way donations go when they visit local agencies today.  The Seeing is Believing bus tour will leave the Memorial Centre parking lot at 9:30 this morning.

 

Secura Financial Group is holding a fund raising BBQ today at its office on Gardiners Road. Former United Way campaign chair Pat Murphy is encouraging people to get their lunch at Secura between 11:30 and 1:30 today.

 

Murphy will morph into the front man for 80’s Enuff tomorrow night for the Rocktember United Way fund raising concert at Blue Martini – billed as a night straight out of the 80’s.

 

New Business – Horse Therapy

A new business that uses horses for therapy is hosting an open house in Enterprise tomorrow.

Charmed Horse Assisted Wellness Centre is located at Charmed Stables on Brown Road in Enterprise.

The open house from 10am to 2pm will include demonstrations of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy with volunteer firefighters from Stone Mills Township and soldiers from CFB Kingston.
