Weather Story – Special Weather Statement

If your weather app is predicting the end of the world because of weather – hang on for a second.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement saying a storm will track northeast to reach Southern Ontario Wednesday. This storm is expected to bring rain and significant snow to some areas, along with the possibility of freezing rain….but here’s the thing…forecasters aren’t certain on what the track of the storm will be at this time – so – stay tuned.

Bath Road Crash

Bath Road re-opened to traffic in Amherstview early today following a single vehicle crash.

The OPP closed Bath Road at Fairfield Boulevard to investigate the crash.

The vehicle was blocking a portion of the road.

Bath Road re-opened early this morning.

There’s no word on injuries or exactly what happened.

Fatal Crash – 401

A man who died on the 401 in Kingston had crashed into the concrete median and got out of his vehicle to cross the highway when he was hit by other vehicles.

The OPP says the man’s car struck the centre concrete median on the westbound 401 around 7:00 Friday night between Joyceville Road and John F Scott Road.

Investigators say the man was struck by other vehicles when he tried to cross the westbound lanes.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His identity hasn’t been released.  The westbound lanes were closed until shortly after midnight while police investigated.

Inmate Dies

An inmate has died in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

A news release says 29 year old Ryan James Henke was found unresponsive in his cell on February 19th.

It says staff was not able to resuscitate Henke.

He had been serving 3 years and six months for robbery and had been in prison since February of 2014.

Big Dig – Shoplifter

A downtown shoplifter learned the hard way construction crews working on the “Big Dig” are also keeping a close eye on what’s happening in the area.

Several workers from Corcoran Excavating are getting a thank you for grabbing a shoplifting suspect on Friday who was being chased by a female employee of a downtown store.

The man was held until police arrived.  He’s been charged after stolen merchandise from several stores was recovered.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is coming up on Wednesday and an anti-bullying conference has been planned for the downtown branch of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library.

The free session from 3 to 7 p.m. is open to young people from 12 to 24.

The goal for the session is to get young people more engaged in the community and get them talking about tough issues.  The conference is hosted by the City of Kingston and young people can register through the Kingston Frontenac Public Library website.

Queen’s Prof – Engineering Honour

A Queen’s University professor has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.  Kerry Rowe is one of just two Canadians in the two thousand member organization.

Rowe is an expert in the use of liners in landfill sites and has used his expertise in this area to also help the mining industry with disposal of waste.

He will be formally inducted into the U.S. National Academy of Engineering on October 9th during its national meeting in Washington, D.C.

Topless Ice Fishing

They went topless ice fishing on Picton Bay on Saturday afternoon.

25 people – including one woman – took part in a five minute topless fishing spree called…Shirts Off – Fish On as part of the seventh annual Merland Park Fishing Derby.

The first person to catch a fish wins the top prize.  Rick Peirson of Syracuse, New York, was this year’s winner with an 11 inch perch.

The event is part of a fun raising weekend for the Kiwanis Terrific Kids program and raised about $1,500.

Dragons’ Den

Dragons’ Den will be holding open auditions in Kingston on Friday.

If you have something you think is going to become the latest hit product – auditions will take place at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre starting at 4pm on Friday.

Aspiring entrepreneurs should prepare a pitch that takes five minutes or less.

Prospective pitchers are encouraged to apply online and bring a completed application form to the audition.

Donald Brashear and Kingston entrepreneur Jibin Joseph were successful in securing funding for Brash’s new hockey sticks when they made a pitch to the Dragons on this seasons version of the show.
