September 4 – 15: Fall Book Fair

Everyone knows that a picture says a thousand words, but a good book says a thousand more! This September, get your hands on some amazing finds and support the Kingston Symphony’s Volunteer Committee by checking out the annual Book Fair at the Kingston Symphony Warehouse! A range of genres are available to satisfy the tastes of all book lovers including recent fiction, mysteries, military, Canadiana, children’s books, young adult novels, sheet music and more! An abundance of adventure awaits Kingston readers! There is opening night admission charge. There is no admission fee for the remainder of the sale. For more details, please see below.

OPENING NIGHT ADMISSION Early Bird Entry 4pm – 4:30pm. Tickets are $20 each and only 50 tickets will be sold. They will be available for purchase by phone (613-546-9729) or online beginning on Wednesday, August 14 at 9am. Tickets can be picked up at the Kingston Symphony Warehouse (785 Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard, Unit 7A) beginning at 2pm. Absolutely no refunds. Regular Entry (4:30pm – 8pm) tickets are $5 each and are available in person only on September 4th after 2pm at the door. FREE ADMISSION REMAINDER OF SALE. We are no longer accepting donations for the Fall 2019 Book Fair. The next opportunity to donate to the Book Fair will be during Warehouse Wednesdays in early 2020. September 9: Grownup Storytime

Many adults enjoy audiobooks, but there’s something special about listening to someone read aloud live and in person. It lets you enjoy not just a story but the company you’re in. Meghan Cox Gurdon, children’s book critic for the Wall Street Journal, has written about the physiological rewards of hearing a story read aloud in her new book The Enchanted Hour: the Miraculous Power of Reading Aloud in the Age of Distraction. “Stress hormones are decreased and bonding hormones increase,” she explains. KFPL, which has long offered read-alouds for children and families, is launching a new program beginning September 9 called Grownup Storytime, with the tag-line “Why should kids have all the fun?” Adults of all ages are invited to drop by the Sydenham branch each Monday to listen to stories, essays, excerpts or articles read by Programming Assistant Margi McKay—one week it might be something by Bill Bryson; another, it might be something by Stephen Leacock or Richard Wagamese. Feel free to bring your lunch, or perhaps your knitting. Beverages will be provided. If the group feels like staying to talk about what they’ve heard, there’ll be time for that as well. Grownup Storytime will run from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays at the Sydenham branch, from September 9 through October 21 (except on Monday, October 14, when the library will be closed for Thanksgiving.) September 14: The Puppy Prowl Dog Walk

Sponsored by the Gananoque & District Humane Society. This walk is to help raise funds for our dog program in which we rescue, foster and rehome abandoned dogs in Township Leeds & the 1000 Islands. Copy a pledge sheet from our website www.ganhumanesociety.ca and find sponsors for your walk, with dogs or on your own.
