Roads – Snow Day

A snowfall warning and snow-covered roads led to another snow day for students throughout the region.

Both Tri-board Transportation and Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario announced early this morning there would be no school transportation today.

Schools are open even though there was no school transportation…but…elementary schools in the Limestone District Board are closed due to a rotating strike by members of the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.

 

Rail Line Blockade

A protest has closed the CN and VIA Rail tracks on Wyman Road in the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

VIA Rail is asking passengers to check its website to see if their train has been cancelled.

Two trains have been cancelled this morning.

A group of protesters set up the blockade yesterday afternoon…they did let several trains through but resumed the blockade last night.  The protest is in support of a First Nation in B-C who are trying to block a natural gas pipeline.  The RCMP have arrested several of those protesters.

 

Social Media Threats – Arrest

Kingston Police have made an arrested after complaints about a man who had been making death threats on social media.  Police began their investigation around 9am yesterday and arrested a man at a residence on Unity Road around 1pm.

The 56-year-old has been charged with uttering a death threat.

 

Update – Arrests – Firearm Discharged

A second person has been arrested after a firearm was discharged into the door of an apartment in Deseronto on January 17th.

The OPP says it seized drugs and firearms…including the one they believe was fired during the execution of search warrants on Wednesday in Kingston and Deseronto.

23-year-old Damien Shelley-Gaston of Deseronto was arrested on Wednesday and faces multiple charges including possession for the purpose of trafficking, breaching conditions of previous court orders and possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm.

26-year-old Dyllon Nelson is already facing a number of charges after being arrested in Kingston on January 22nd.

 

Coronavirus – Plane Lands in Trenton

The plane bringing Canadian citizens back home from the centre of a global novel coronavirus outbreak landed at CFB Trenton this morning.   The flight was chartered by the Canadian government and has brought 176 people from Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus originated.

The passengers and crew will spend two weeks under quarantine at the air force base.

Dozens of Canadians also left China on board a United States government flight that left a few hours after the Canadian flight.

The Canadian government’s flight had 211 spaces for citizens who were trapped in Wuhan, but Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said there were some no-shows as expected.

Champagne said Thursday that two-thirds of Canadians who are seeking to leave the locked-down city have been evacuated.

He said another flight for remaining Canadians in Wuhan is scheduled to depart on February 10th.

 

Feb Fest – Hockey Day

It is another big weekend for Feb Fest in downtown Kingston.

Tomorrow is Hockey Day and minor hockey teams will be taking to the rink in Springer Market Square tomorrow morning.

The Historic Hockey Series takes over the ice at 1pm and you can skate with the Kingston Frontenacs from 4-5pm.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Fan Zone will be in the square on Saturday and Sunday.

Gary Leeman will be signing autographs tomorrow and Jay McClement will be signing autographs on Sunday as Feb Fest activities continue in the square.
