Schools – Job Action

Contract talks between the union representing education workers and the Ontario government failed to reach an agreement on the weekend and a work to rule campaign begins today.

The 55 thousand members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees at schools in the province will be refusing to work overtime and perform extra duties.

 

Red Light Cameras

The City of Kingston is holding information sessions today on red-light cameras.

They are part of the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan endorsed by city council.

Council will vote on whether to move forward with red-light cameras later this year.

The info sessions today are from 2-4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in Memorial Hall at Kingston City Hall.

 

Paramedics Award

The Deputy Chief of Frontenac Paramedics has received the Richard J. Armstrong Leadership Award from the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs.

Heather Edward is being recognized for outstanding leadership and significant contributions to Emergency Medical Services in Ontario.

Edward joined Frontenac Paramedics this summer after serving as Superintendent of Operations and Education and the Acting Deputy Commander of Toronto Paramedics.

 

Orange Shirt Day

It’s the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation…commonly known as Orange Shirt Day.

People across Canada will be wearing orange to honour and remember Indigenous children who were sent to resident schools. Orange Shirt Day began in 2013 and is way to continue the discussion of the impacts of residential schools across Canada.

 

Major Milestone

A major milestone in Kingston’s history took place on this day just 6 years ago.

It was on this day in 2013 that Kingston Penitentiary closed its doors.

Canada’s most notorious federal prison had been in operation for 178 year and was designated a national historic site in 1990.

Since it was closed as a prison it has opened its doors to tourists and has become one of Kingston’s top tourist attraction.

 

Murdoch Mysteries

Springer Market Square will become the backdrop for an episode of Murdoch Mysteries today.  The television series will be filming two scenes for an upcoming episode.

A fan viewing area will be set up and the first 50 people there will get a wristband for a meet and greet with the stars of the show after the filming wraps up on Monday morning.

The crew will be filming at Kingston Pen tomorrow and at other unnamed locations on Wednesday and Thursday.

Market Street will be closed this morning and there will be periodic 2 to 3-minute closures of Ontario Street from Brock to Clarence between film shots.

 

United Way

The United Way KFLA campaign heads into this week with a little less than two thirds of its goal still to come.

The campaign has raised almost 1.3 million dollars…36% of the $3,551,000 goal.

Kingston Fire and Rescue hosted a successful carwash and barbecue on Friday.

The Kingston Professional Firefighters Association presented the campaign with a donation of $500.
