Red Light Cameras

Kingston city council will have the final say – but it sounds like red-light cameras are coming to Kingston.

The city issued a news release yesterday saying residents can ask questions about a potential red-light camera program that is part of the Vision Zero Road Safety Plan.  The plan was endorsed by city council earlier this month.  Council will vote on whether to move forward with red-light cameras later this year.

You can submit questions about the plan through the city’s Get Involved Kingston platform.

Two public information sessions have also been planned for Monday, September 30th in Memorial Hall.

Traffic Manager Deanna Green says the city expects the cameras will cut red light running in half and reduce right angle collisions by 25%.

Kingston – Active Transportation

Kingston’s will be investing about 23 million dollars on pedestrian and cycling routes over the next five years.  Council has approved the city’s active transportation strategy.  The plan calls for the addition of about 400 kilometres to develop cycling and walking networks in the Bayridge area, Reddendale and Henderson Place, and North King’s Town.

Climate Strike

Ontario’s former environmental commissioner is coming to Kingston to talk about the city’s declaration of a climate emergency.

Environmental lawyer Dianne Saxe will be speaking at St. George’s Cathedral at 6:30 tonight and will be part of a discussion at St. Lawrence College tomorrow hosted by Switch Kingston.

The events are part of Climate Strike Week in Kingston.  Various events will be taking place until September 27th including a Climate Strike March to Kingston City Hall tomorrow.

Organizers are urging people to gather at the John Deutsch University Centre at noon for music and a rally and then march to City Hall starting for a rally and speeches.

Belle Park Plan

Kingston will have some new green space to enjoy in the future.

City council has approved the plan to turn about three quarters of Belle Park into a natural area.

The golf course has already been closed.  There will be a multi-use sports field and the tennis courts will be replaced with pickleball courts.

United Way Update

The United Way KFLA Campaign is almost at the $1 million-dollar mark.

The campaign hit almost $942,000 yesterday…27% of the $3,551,000 goal.

CFB Kingston will officially launch its fund-raising campaign tomorrow and Secura Financial will be holding its annual fund-raising barbecue tomorrow.

Trudeau – Brown Face

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has apologized and says he should have known better, but he didn’t after Time Magazine published a photo of Trudeau in brownface makeup.  Another picture has also surfaced.

The black and white photo was published in the yearbook of the Vancouver private school where he was a teacher in 2001.  It was taken at an Arabian Nights themed costume party.  Trudeau also admitted to dressing up and singing Day-Oh in makeup when he was in a high school talent show.  A picture of that has surfaced on social media.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says it shows someone who has a complete lack of judgement and is not fit to govern this country.

N-D-P Leader Jagmeet Singh says it seems to be a pattern for Trudeau saying one thing in public and being a completely different person behind closed doors.
