401 EB Closed

The 401 Eastbound at Westbrook was closed this morning following a collision involving three transport trucks.

The crash blocked both eastbound lanes and the OPP says it expects a lengthy closure of the eastbound 401.

Traffic is being detoured off the 401 at County Road 6…to Highway 2 and then back onto the 401 at Gardiners Road.

 

Train – Tanker

The rail crossing on County Road 6 at Taylor Kidd Boulevard in Loyalist Township was closed for several hours last night after a VIA Rail passenger train from Toronto clipped a railway tanker car.

The initial reports said the train had hit a truck at the crossing, but passenger say they were told by emergency services personnel the train had hit a tanker car on another track.

The train was damaged and couldn’t continue its trip, but nobody was injured.

Passengers were transferred to another train several hours later.

 

Drone – Contraband

A drone carrying a large load of tobacco and cannabis has been seized by Correctional staff at Collins Bay Institution.

The Correctional Service says the drone was carrying just over 100 grams of tobacco and almost a pound of cannabis.

Corrections says the payload would have been worth more than 45 thousand dollars inside the institution.

The drone was seized by staff at Collins Bay around 9:45 Monday night.

 

Hit and Run – Break In

Kingston Police say a hit and run crash involving a van and a pickup truck in Kingston took place following a break in to an apartment in the area of Division and York Streets.

The van took off from the crash at Patrick and John Streets on Tuesday afternoon but was found nearby.  The occupants were seen getting into another vehicle.  Police are looking for a woman and three men.

They say the van had been used as a getaway vehicle and weapons were used during the break in where electronics were stolen.  They’re looking for a woman and three men.

 

Kingston – Public Engagement Award

The International Association for Public Participation has given Kingston its Organization of the Year honours for developing a public engagement framework.  The award was presented at its conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The organization says the city has shown a commitment to involve the public in decision making through workshops, surveys, open houses, one-on-one interviews, focus groups and presentations making good on a pledge made in 2017 to increase public engagement.

Kingston will now be judged against other winners from Australasia, Southern Africa, USA and Indonesia with the winner being announced next month.

 

Weekend Events

It’s another busy weekend in Kingston…

The 10th Annual Kingston Multicultural Arts Festival takes place on Sunday in Confederation Park.

20 pavilions will be featured this year.

The Garrison Family Fun Fest is taking place at CFB Kingston.

The concert featuring Destroyer, Helix and Prism is tomorrow night and a full day of activities takes place on Sunday.

United Way Breakfast

The campaign goal for the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is $3,551,000.

Last year the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington raised a record $3,564,000…$108,000 more than the goal.

The money was used to support 64 programs at 42 agencies in the region.

Over 500 people got together for breakfast this morning at the Ambassador Hotel and Conference Centre for the kickoff to the campaign.
