Family Fun World – Sold

Kingston Family Fun World has been sold and the last night for movies at the Drive-in will be Sunday, September 1st.

Owner Ruth Wannamacher says the property has been sold to a Montreal based company and she doesn’t know what they have planned…but doubts it will continue to operate Fun World.

Ruth’s husband Dan started the business 23 years ago.  Dan passed away suddenly in July of 2016.

Ruth says, while they will stop showing movies on September 1st, the go-kart track will operate until the end of September.

 

KPMG – Municipal Budget Audit

The City of Kingston has hired KPMG to do an in-depth audit of the municipal budget.

The city will get $175,000 from the Ontario government to perform the audit.

It will look at three specific areas of the budget…housing, social services and long-term care.

This year’s budget for housing and social services is $17.1 million.  The budget for long term care is $5.7 million.

The goal is to find savings that will cover additional costs to the city when the province cuts back on payments for public health and child care next year.

The results of the audit have to be released to the public by the end of November.

 

Large Vehicle Fire

Fire has destroyed the cab of a transport truck in Kingston.

The large fire broke out yesterday in the cab of the transport hauling an SLH trailer on Centennial Drive.

Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to the scene around 11:30 yesterday morning.

Nobody was injured but the cab of the truck was destroyed in the fire.

 

AccuWeather Fall Forecast

Warm weather will continue into October in the Kingston area according to the fall forecast from AccuWeather.

It says fall will get off to a late start around the Great Lakes and into Quebec as the main storm track allows for surges of warmth and humidity to continue into October.

 

Calyx and Trichomes

A Kingston business has lost out in the second Ontario Cannabis Store lottery.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission announced the 42 winners yesterday who will be allowed to apply for a license to operate a cannabis retail outlet.

Calyx and Trichomes on Midland Avenue had applied – but for the second time lost out in the lottery.

Owner Jennawae McLean says they hope to apply if there’s another lottery, but says province should be approving licenses for business people who have put everything in place to legally sell cannabis, like Calyx and Trichomes.

Donation – UHKF

The University Hospitals Kingston Foundation will celebrate what it is calling a transformational gift for women’s health this afternoon.

The foundation is holding will officially receive a gift of $285 thousand dollars…185 thousand was raised from B’Nai Brith Kingston’s 2018 An Evening With…

The other $100.000 was donated by physicians in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The money will be used to support the purchase of minimally invasive surgical equipment for women.

 

Scotiabank – Smith Donation

The Smith School of Business at Queen’s University has received a $2 million-dollar donation from Scotiabank.  The money is an ongoing commitment to Smith’s Scotiabank Centre for Customers Analytics and will allow it to continue operating through 2025.

It was established at Queen’s in 2016 with a $2.2 million-dollar donation by Scotiabank.
