Water Rescue

There is a report a man has been pulled from the Lake Ontario near Millhaven after a search by police, the coast guard, search and rescue at CFB Trenton and the Amherst Island Ferry.

Emergency services responded to a call about a man in the water near the Amherst Island ferry dock last night.

The report says a man was pulled from the water by the Canadian Coast Guard AT 7:20 p.m.

The Coast Guard would not confirm the rescue this morning and the OPP had not responded to request for information by 8:30 this morning.

 

Metro Assault

A man was taken to Kingston General Hospital by paramedics after an assault at the Metro Grocery Store at Barrie and Princess Streets.  It happened shortly after seven yesterday morning.

The grocery store’s front entrance was closed off with police tape for several hours.

No arrest was made at the scene.

 

OPP – Head on Crash

The driver of a pickup truck going the wrong way on the 401 near Napanee is facing charges after a head on crash with a transport truck early yesterday morning.

The OPP says a 38 year old man from Elginburg was arrested at the scene of the crash at about 12:45am but he had to be taken to hospital for treatment of injuries.

The driver of the transport wasn’t injured.

The 401 eastbound was closed at Palace Road for about four hours following the crash.

 

Catholic School Board – Government Cuts

The chair of the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board says changes in education announced by the Ford government will be devastating.

Terry Shea has sent a letter to the minister of education that says in part…the boards three high schools will be decimated in terms of what they can offer to students beyond core courses.

It says early estimates indicate the school board will lose over 40 teaching jobs because of increased class sizes.  It also says the cut in autism funding will result in a loss of direct supports for students with special needs.

 

General Strike

The weather didn’t cooperate – but that didn’t stop about sixty people in Kingston from holding what was called a general strike against the Ford government.  The protest took place starting at noon yesterday in front of Kingston City Hall.  People gathered to protest the Ontario government’s cuts in funding to education, health and both mental health and addictions programs.

 

Dome to Sue Kingston

The owner of the Kingston 1000 Islands Sportsplex says it plans to sue the city of Kingston after a two day art and craft sale was cancelled at the last minute.

The show at the dome in Westbrook Road last weekend was supposed to feature 55 vendors.

The city says the owners were informed the venue doesn’t meet zoning or fire code requirements.

But Harbour Edge says many shows have been held at the dome calling the last minute cancellation of the show an abuse of power that has no equivalent.

 

Bernier Visit

The leader of the Peoples Party of Canada was in Kingston last night to introduce the party’s candidate for this falls federal election.

About 150 people attended the session with Maxime Bernier.

The party’s candidate for Kingston and the Islands will be Andy Brooke.

 

CFB Kingston

CFB Kingston is advising residents it will be conducting a demolition range exercise today and people may hear several large booms near the base.

The exercise was scheduled for 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A statement from the base says the exercise is being conducted under strict safety guidelines and poses no risk to the public.
