Loyalist Budget

Property owners in Loyalist Township are getting a break from the municipality on their tax bill.

Loyalist Township Council has approved a budget that contains no increase in taxes.

However, property taxes are determined by the township budget and the provincial assessment of the value of your home.

The average residential assessment has gone up $4,750 dollars in Loyalist and that translates into a tax increase of about $34 on an average property tax bill.

 

Bedford – Peace Bond

A 33 year old Kingston man who was under a special public safety peace bond has been cleared of charges.

Mark Bedford was arrested last June and has been in custody ever since after he was charged with violating his ban on using technology.

The judge found the evidence collected by police was circumstantial.

Kingston Police are now hoping to place Bedford under another peace bond.

He had been barred from using the Internet after pleading guilty in 2008 to multiple charges of luring young girls into performing sex acts in front of web cams.

 

Charges – Fight

Kingston Police have charged two women following reports of two groups of girls fighting at the bus transfer area of the Cataraqui Centre on March 29th.

Police have concluded an investigation and two women are facing charges after turning themselves in at police headquarters.

A 19 year old woman has been charged with two counts of assault and a 23 year old woman has been charged with one count of assault.

 

Copper Thefts

A man and woman have been arrested trying to steal copper from a business in Kingston’s west end.

Kingston Police found a man inside the building around 4am yesterday.  The 32 year old was arrested after trying to run from officers…charges against him include breach of probation.

A 34 year old woman was arrested in the front seat of a car.  Police say there were two coils of copper wire in the back seat.

 

Civic Awards

The city has announced nominations are now open for its Annual Civic Awards.

The awards include the Civic Award for Youth Volunteerism, First Capital Distinguished Citizen, and Honorable Achievement award.

The deadline for nominations is May 3rd and the details are on the city’s website.

Citizenship Ceremony

It is a special day for 50 people in Kingston.

Kingston Immigration Partnership in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Navy is hosting a special Citizenship Ceremony at HMCS Cataraqui.

Kingston will welcome 50 new citizens at the ceremony today.

The last time a Citizenship ceremony was held in Kingston was in January of 2015.
