Tyendinaga Fire

 

An early morning fire has destroyed a building under construction on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory.

Firefighters were called to the building on Highway 49 between Bayshore Road and York Road around 4:30 this morning.  The structure was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.  The building was vacant.  It was under construction as a cannabis dispensary.  Nobody was injured in the fire.  There has been no determination of what caused the fire.

 

Domestic Violence Charges

 

Kingston Police have charged a man with assault causing bodily harm…injuring an animal, forcible confinement and criminal harassment. The 28 year old is facing a total of 12 charges for domestic violence involving a woman and charges related to threatening another man with a knife.

Kingston Police say the man had shown up at a north end residence on Friday after sending threatening messages to the woman and confronted the other man.  Police were called and the man was arrested.

 

 

Special Olympics – KP

 

Kingston Police have hosted a 50th anniversary celebration for Special Olympics.

Napanee OPP also held a 50th anniversary celebration yesterday.

Donations are being encouraged to will help send student athletes to compete in the Special Olympics in Toronto in May.  High school students are involved for the first time.

LCVI is sending a team to compete in basketball.  Napanee District Secondary School is sending teams in bocce, soccer and basketball.

Donations for the high school athletes are being accepted under the Draft and Athlete program.

Queen’s – Motionball – Special Olympics

 

A tournament at Queen’s University on the weekend has raised $22,000 for Special Olympics.

Special Olympics athletes were paired with varsity athletes in the annual Motionball tournament.  Last year the tournament raised $18,000.

 

World Epilepsy Day

 

Today is World Epilepsy Day.

People are wearing purple to help create awareness about epilepsy.

Purple Day is held in countries around the world.

It’s estimated that one out of every 100 people has epilepsy and it affects 50 million people worldwide.

Coffee Way at Division and Concession Streets has purple sweets this morning and a there’s a draw for an Epilepsy South Eastern Ontario gift bag.

Kingston City Hall will be lit up in purple this evening in support of Purple Day.

War Amps

 

A boy from the Kingston area is one of the people who has benefited from a unique program.  You may have received key tags from The War Amps in the mail recently.

Seven year old Carter Sly of Elginburg is a member of The War Amps Child Amputee Program. His waterproof leg for swimming and walking on wet surfaces was funded through public support of the key tag service.  Donations for the key tags fund the program.

The plastic tags have helped hundreds of people get their keys back when they get lost.
