Council – Climate Fund

It wasn’t unanimous but city council has approved the Kingston Climate Fund.

The vote was 9-3 in favour of the motion from city councillor Ryan Boehme.  Councillor Chapelle wasn’t present for the vote.

Boehme says the fund will help Kingston become a hub for innovative technology to reduce greenhouse gases.

People will be encouraged to donate to the fund and city staff says they would be eligible for a tax deduction.

The money will provide grants for local climate action initiatives.

City staff will now prepare the details.

 

Sudden Death – Quinte Detention Centre

A 31 year old inmate has died at the Quinte Regional Detention Centre in Napanee.

Paramedics were called to the jail on Richmond Boulevard early Monday morning in response to a report of an inmate who was found unresponsive inside the facility.

The male inmate was pronounced dead at the scene.

Napanee OPP is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

The name of the inmate hasn’t been released.

 

Woman Charged – Stabbing

Kingston Police say a man was stabbed during a domestic dispute early in the morning on March 16th.  He suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the man had also been assaulted twice during the previous week.

A 21 year old woman has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and assault.

 

Crash – Charges

A 19 year old Kingston man is facing charges after a wild crash at 1:45 a.m. on Monday.

A vehicle going westbound on Bath Road hit several parked cars in a parking lot near Collins Bay Road and flipped over onto its roof.  One of the parked cars was pushed through the front window of a business.

A woman stopped to help the driver.  Police say she was punched and kicked before a man fled the scene.

He has been charged with assault, dangerous driving, impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and breach probation.

 

Federal Budget

The federal budget announced yesterday contains millions in funding for the Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research at Queen’s University.

The budget proposes a $25 million fund for the institute to continue its ongoing operations.

 

Glorious Sons – Canadian Open

A Kingston band that has toured in Europe and the U-S will be featured at the Canadian Open golf tournament.

The Glorious Sons and Florida Georgia Line will headline a new concert series at the Hamilton Golf and Country Club.  The Canadian Open takes place starting on June 3rd.

Florida Georgia Line will perform after the second round on June 7th and the Juno-award winning The Glorious Sons will play on June 8th, after the third round.

 

Spring – Super Worm Moon

Spring officially arrives today!

The Vernal Equinox begins at 5:58 this afternoon and it will be accompanied by a Super Worm Moon.

If the sky is clear tonight you’ll be able to see the third and final super moon of the year. Super moons appear slightly bigger and brighter than normal full moons.

A full moon in March is called a Worm Moon.

The next super moon is not set to rise until February 9th of 2020.

 

Leeds OPP – Movie Watcher

The OPP in Leeds County…just east of Kingston…say 24 people were charged with distracted driving during their March break campaign.

One driver from Quebec was stopped on the 401 when police saw the MGM Lion Roar on a screen mounted on the driver’s windshield.  Police say they stopped the vehicle before the man from Quebec was able to watch his movie.
