Kiley – City Council

 

When Robert Kiley announced he’d stepped back from his duties as deputy leader of the Green Party of Ontario – people in Kingston thought he’d announce he is running for mayor…but Kiley has announced he is running for a seat as the councillor for Trillium District.

Kiley doesn’t live in the district but says he grew up there…his family has a long history of living in the district and his business office is also in the district.

Kiley says he wants to see pot holes filled across the city and bike lanes that are separated from traffic by barriers.

 

Fire Destroys Home

 

A home on Washburn Road has been destroyed by fire.

The single family home was fully engulfed in flames when South Frontenac firefighters got there Friday afternoon.  The people in the home got out safely and were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined.

 

Fire Bans

 

Municipalities throughout the area are instituting burning bans due to the dry conditions.

Central Frontenac, The Town of Gananoque and the Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands have all announced a complete ban on burning…including campfires, bonfires and the use of outdoor wood burning appliances.

 

Retirement Home Closing

 

A Kingston retirement home will be closing after the announcement that its license will be revoked at the end of October.  The Retirement Home Regulatory Authority has determined Fairfield Manor East isn’t providing adequate care for its residents.  It has determined residents have been neglected and has revoked the license for the home effective October 31st.

 

Man Sentenced

 

A 31 year old Kingston man has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for breaking into the home of a 70 year old man and holding him at knifepoint.

Matthew Ferguson pleaded guilty to charges last month.  He’s already spent 119 days in jail after being arrested at the home of the man in February.

 

Quarry Crowds

 

Kingston Police say people found trespassing at a quarry off Highway 15 could be arrested and charged.  People who live near the quarry in Kingston say there have been crowds of people using it for swimming this summer even though there is a two metre tall fence around the property.  The fence was erected after 24 year old Tylor Salter drowned in the quarry in 2016.

 

People’s Choice – Buskers Rendezvous

 

The 30th annual edition of the Kingston Buskers Rendezvous is history.

Street performers entertained large crowds during almost perfect weather on the weekend.

The Grand Finale took place last night in front of a packed Confederation Park audience last night.

Street Circus was announced as the People’s Choice winner.
