Election Campaign

 

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford has told a gathering in Kingston an NDP government would be ten times worse than the current Liberal government.

Ford stopped at Kingston and the Islands candidate Garry Bennett’s office on Sunday.

He repeated promises to cut taxes for middle income earners, reduce hydro rates and end hallway medicine.

Ford urged people to vote PC to avoid an NDP government.

 

Kathleen Wynne has been urging people to vote for Liberal candidates to avoid an NDP or Progressive Conservative majority.  Wynne admitted in a speech on Saturday…the Liberals won’t form the government after the election on Thursday.

 

Cyclist Dies

 

Sad news about the cyclist who was in critical condition at Kingston General Hospital after a group of cyclists on a charity ride were hit by a vehicle near Amherstview.

42 year old Jeff Vervaeke of Waterdown, Ontario passed away on Friday.

Vervaeke was in a group of cyclists that stopped at the side of the road just west of Amherstview on Sunday, May 27th and was hit by a vehicle.

A 51 year old man from Kingston faces charges in connection with the crash.

 

Robbery – OPP

 

The man who robbed the Royal Bank on Dundas Street in Napanee remains on the loose.

The bank was robbed at 12:23 on Friday afternoon.

A man fled on food and a search failed to turn up a suspect.

The man was wearing baggy jeans, a white t-shirt, black hoodie, a black ball cap and two sets of sunglasses.  He was wearing one pair and had the other on the rim of his ball cap.

 

Ship Aground – Freed

 

Three ocean going tugs were needed to free a ship that ran aground in the St. Lawrence River in Morrisburg.

Attempts to free the Chem Norma were successful yesterday.  The tanker ran aground early Tuesday morning in the river.  It was undergoing inspections yesterday to ensure its safe to resume its trip to Sarnia with a load of petroleum products.

 

Cycling Week

 

It’s Cycling Week and the first Roll-in-Breakfast for the week took place at St. Lawrence College between 7:30 and 9:30 this morning.

It’s also Commuter Challenge Week.

The city encourages everyone to cycle, walk, take public transit, or carpool to work.

Feustel – Space Station

 

Queen’s University grad Drew Feustel has taken over command of the International Space Station.

Feustel took command of the space station in a ceremony on Friday.

Three members of the space station crew returned to earth yesterday and a new group of three are scheduled to arrive at the station on Wednesday for Expedition 56.

The patch for the mission was designed by Feustel’s son, Aden.

 

Gilmour Wedding

 

It was a special weekend for Kingston hockey legend Doug Gilmour.

Gilmour married his long time fiancé Sonya on Saturday.  It’s his third marriage. The couple has a nine year old daughter.
