Kingston man arrested for driving while disqualified

A 39 year old man has been arrested after Kingston Police caught him driving while DISQUALIFIED, under the Criminal Code of Canada.

Officers were parked on Wilson Street when the accused drove past.

A check on the license plate revealed the registered owner was convicted of impaired driving, and prohibited from driving for 2 years.

The accused was arrested, and charged with driving while disqualified.

The vehicle was towed and impounded for 45 days.

 

Election Update – Wynne in Kingston

Liberal Leader Kathleen Wynne was in town yesterday, to tour the Innovation Hub at St. Lawrence College, and speak with students.

She mainly spoke on the Liberal’s platform heading into the upcoming election.

Doug Ford and Andrea Horwath also attended events across southern Ontario, with Ford in Cambridge and Kitchener, and Horwath in Toronto and St. Catharines.

 

Paul Bernardo to appear in court

Convicted killer Paul Bernardo is scheduled to make a court appearance in Napanee today, via video from prison.

He is charged with one count of possession of a weapon.

This will be his third court date on the matter when he steps before a camera at the maximum-security Millhaven Institution.

Court documents show the alleged offence occurred February 9th at the prison.

 

Kilauea Eruption

Many eyes across the world are on Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano today, after an explosive eruption around noon.

The most recent eruption sent ash 30-thousand feet into the air.

Scientists have warned that eruptions at the summit could send heavy ashfall across communities near the summit and toss boulders “the size of cows” almost as far as a kilometer.

Since a new zone of Mount Kilauea began erupting almost two weeks ago, lava has wrecked dozens of homes and forced hundreds of people to be evacuated.

Scientists have warned it likely won’t be the last eruption.

 

 

Victoria Day in Kingston

With Victoria Day long weekend upon us, many celebrations are getting set to take place.

The city is holding a family friendly party on Sunday at Lake Ontario Park, where you can expect to find a variety of activities and performances, capped off with fireworks at 9:30pm.

They also remind everyone that transit service will run on a Sunday schedule on Monday, and city services such as libraries, arenas, and administration will be closed.

There will also be no garbage collection on Monday, however you may put out two untagged bags on your first collection day after Victoria Day. Collection occurs the day after your regular collection day.

 

Kingston man charged with assault with a weapon

A 62 year old man has been charged with assault with a weapon, after going after his step son with a knife.

The accused and the victim began yelling over a work related issue Wednesday afternoon, and the situation escalated.

When police arrived, the accused had calmed down and was cooperative.

He was taken into custody to attend a bail hearing yesterday.

 

Public input on Parks and Recreation

The City is looking for input on updating its Parks and Recreation Master Plan, aimed at supporting active fun over the next 15 years.

They will be holding an open house on Wednesday, May 30th, at the INVISTA CENTRE.

There will also be an online survey that can be found on the city’s website from may 30th to june 18th.

They ask anyone with ideas on how to improve the recreation and leisure opportunities to reach out, and give their input.

 

MPP Candidates Debate

Residents got a closer look at their MPP Candidates yesterday, when the Greater Kingston Champer of Commerce hosted an all-candidates luncheon.

The meet-and-greet was organized in hopes of bridging the gap between local business owners and the candidates.

The chamber plans to present a strategy that leverages the city’s economic advantages and strengthens regional competitiveness.

Candidates focused on lowering hydro rates, and adjusting to the $15 minimum wage.

The election is set for June 7th

 

Sewer Overflows

Heading into a potentially rainy long weekend, the city is reminding everyone that bacteria levels in lakes and rivers are higher, up to 48 HOURS after heavy rainfall.

Officials say sewer overflows contribute to the problem.

They ask that if you plan to swim, fish, or boat in Lake Ontario within 48 hours of heavy rain, check the sewer overflow map on Utilities Kingston’s website.

Sewer overflow locations affecting the Great Cataraqui River, the Little Cataraqui Creek, and other surrounding bodies of water are also shown.
