Pedestrians Killed

The death toll has risen to 10 after a van mowed down pedestrians on a busy Toronto sidewalk.  15 people were injured.  The driver fled the van and was captured in a tense but brief confrontation with police.  The officer that arrested the man is being remembered for not shooting the man.

Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale was in Toronto at the time and says on the basis of all available information there would appear to be no national security connection to the incident.  The suspect is a 25-year-old man from Richmond Hill.  He was not known to police.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders says investigators will be piecing together surveillance video and witness accounts in what seems to have been a deliberate attack.

No Food Poisoned

Kingston Police are assuring the public that a man charged with trying to poison his Queen’s University lab partner and roommate did not poison any food he delivered in Kingston.

Police say 26 year old Zijie Wang worked for a food delivery service but there is no evidence to suggest he tampered with any food he delivered between the time he was first arrested in January and when he was re-arrested on April 12th.

His second arrest resulted in further charges in the incident and Wang remains behind bars after being denied bail.  He has been charged with administering a noxious chemical, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

Queen’s – Orientation

The crazy antics of frosh week won’t last for the whole first week when students return to Queen’s University in September.  The University has announced changes that will see students move into residences on Saturday of the Labour Day weekend instead of Sunday.  Orientation will take place until Wednesday and classes will begin on Thursday, September 6th.  Queen’s says it hopes the new schedule will make Orientation more inclusive.
