Tri-Board – Cancellations

Some parents are shaking their heads…two days in a row without school buses in April because of the weather.

Tri-Board Student Transportation announced early this morning buses were cancelled to the North Addington Education Centre, Granite Ridge Education Centre, Land O’ Lakes Public School, Clarendon Central Public and St. James Major Catholic School.  Buses to schools in North Hastings and Central Hastings were also cancelled.

There were several other cancellations and delays of individual buses reported this morning.

Girl Charged – Kingston Police

A 15-year-old Kingston girl has been charged after police say an out of control weekend ended with a fire alarm being pulled at police headquarters when she tried to escape.

Kingston Police say they were called to a home on Sunday and arrested the girl.  She has been charged with making a false fire alarm and breach probation.

Ford – Bennett – Kingston

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford will bring his election campaign to Kingston today.

Kingston and the Islands PC candidate Gary Bennett will host Ford at what’s being called “A Rally for a Better Ontario”.  The rally will take place starting at 6pm at Minos Village Restaurant in Kingston’s west end.

Nobel Winner – Honour – Queen’s

Queen’s University has unveiled two new installations to honour Nobel Prize winner Art McDonald.

McDonald was the co-recipient of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics.  The university unveiled a monument between Ontario Hall and Grant Hall to share the story of prize winning research.  A replica of McDonald’s Nobel Prize medal will also be permanently displayed at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre.

Lockdown Ends – Joyceville

A lockdown at the Joyceville Institution Assessment Unit that was put in place on April 7th has ended.  The Correctional Service says a number of unauthorized items were found during an exceptional search.  A news release says Corrections is strengthening measures to prevent contraband from entering its institutions.  Visits to Joyceville have now resumed.

A lockdown in the medium security unit at Collins Bay remains in place.

Power Outage – Cause

Power has been restored to the Armstrong Road area and Frontenac Mall after an electrical pole and transformer caught fire.  The power went out yesterday morning and was off for most of the day.

Docks – City Council

Kingston city council will be discussing a couple of items dealing with the waterfront when it meets tonight.  Council will be asked to approve a project to raise the height of three fixed docks in Confederation Basin at a cost of about $670,000.  High water levels last spring left those docks underwater.

Council will also consider a proposal to build a new public dock, boat ramp and boat shed at Rotary Park in Collins Bay.  The Limestone Boat and Board Club is proposing the facilities and says it will donate $150,000 to the cost.
