Human Remains – NFP

Kingston Police say no foul play is suspected in the death of a man who disappeared on Christmas night.

The remains of 37 year old Jay Switzer were found on Friday evening in a snowbank on a property on Bath Road, just west of Tanner Drive.  Switzer was last seen on Christmas night when he left his apartment on Castell Road to get cigarettes at a nearby store.

Davidson Obit

Former South Frontenac Mayor Gary Davison has passed away following a brief illness.

He is being remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Davison was a councillor in South Frontenac for four year before becoming mayor and was one of the people responsible for completing the amalgamation process in South Frontenac. He was warden of Frontenac County in 2009 and 2010.  Davison also served for 40 years on the Loughborough Township Fire Department.

Pay Increase

Kingston City Council will discuss a major increase in pay for the mayor and councillors tonight.

An independent committee set up to review the pay of the mayor and council is recommending the mayors base pay go from $94,000 to just over $116,000 a year…a 24% increase.

The committee says the pay for councillors should jump by about 30%…from the current $31,000 to 40 thousand a year.

If city council approves the increases…they will take effect following the municipal election this fall.

Fire Trucks

Kingston fire and Rescue is asking city council for two new fire trucks.

Council is being asked to approve the purchase of the trucks for over $675 thousand dollars each.  They’ll replace two trucks that are reaching their 20 year life cycle in the next year.

Doctor – Newboro

A family doctor in the Village of Newboro has been suspended from practicing for six months by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Dr. Ian Kent Shiozaki had his licence suspended in March after being found guilty of professional misconduct, failing to maintain the standard of practice of the profession and incompetence.

The suspension followed an investigation into his treatment of patients with pain and prescriptions for pain medication.  When he resumes his practice in August he’ll be under restrictions for prescribing pain medications.

Queen’s – New Appointments

Queen’s University has announced its new Vice Principal of Advancement and Interim Vice Principal of Research.  Karen Bertrand will be taking over as VP of Advancement from Tom Harris who is stepping down.

Bertrand is a graduate of Queen’s and most recently led the University of Guelph’s team that raised $200 million.

Kimberly Woodhouse is the new Interim VP of Research.  Woodhouse is currently a professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, holds several patents, and is co-founder of a biotechnology company.

Drunk – Turns Herself In

This woman from Carrying Place could qualify for the Dink of the Day.

The OPP in Quinte West says the 25 year old woman turned herself in to police at their detachment at 11:30 on Saturday morning.  Officers could detect a strong smell of alcohol and determined she had consumed a large quantity of alcohol before driving herself to the police station.

On top of being charged with Domestic Mischief and Forcible Entry…she is facing a charge of impaired driving.
