As of April 6th, Canadian smartphones could screech out a scary sounding alarm during emergencies.
Canada’s wireless providers are preparing for an update to the National Public Alerting System that will force smartphones to sound an ominous alarm when an emergency alert is triggered.
Compatible smartphones will emit the localized alarm and bilingual text warning in cases that may include Amber Alerts, terrorist attacks, forest fires, natural disasters or severe weather.
Consumers can find out if their phone is eligible and find more information on the program at alertready-dot-C-A.
