Plaza – Appeal

Kingston’s only strip club has been shut down after the city refused to grant renewal of its business license.

The Plaza Gentleman’s Club has been closed since its license expired at the end of December.  Kingston Police didn’t sign off on the renewal sighting a drug bust involving a man at the establishment.

The owners of the club are appealing the decision – but the appeal won’t be heard until February 23rd.

The 29 hotel rooms on the upper floors of the building aren’t affected by the closure of the Gentleman’s Club.

King Street Crash

Kingston Police are continuing their investigation into a crash on King Street West on November 10th of last year.  A van knocked down a utility pole and came to rest against another one.  The 38 year old Kingston man who was driving had to be pried out of the vehicle and was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

He’s been charged with dangerous driving but the investigation is still ongoing and Kingston Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact Constable Mike Rice.

Impaired Driving

Impaired driving continues to be a problem…a 33 year old Kingston man has been charged with impaired after a two vehicle crash at the intersection of Gardiners Road and Cataraqui Woods Drive Monday night.

A 40-year-old Kingston man also faces an impaired driving charge after a vehicle rear ended another vehicle at a stop light on Princess Street at Midland Avenue on Monday night.

Forearm of St. Francis Xavier

The relic of St. Francis Xavier is touring Canada for the first time and it will be at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Kingston today.  The relic is the actual forearm of the famous missionary saint who baptized close to one hundred thousand people.

Archbishop O’Brien will conduct a special mass during noon hour today.

There will be public veneration this afternoon and tonight and a talk about St. Francis Xavier at 7:30 tonight.

Ranked Balloting Meeting

Voters in Kingston will decide whether future municipal elections will stay the way they are or change to a ranked ballot system in a referendum during the municipal election this fall.

If you’re interested in finding out about Ranked Ballot Voting…there are open houses today to explain the system that allows voters to rank the candidates.  A formula is then used and the person getting the highest ranking wins.  The current system gives the win to the person who has the most votes.

The open houses are from 2 to 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sir John A. Macdonald Public School.

Two more sessions will take place tomorrow at the Invista Centre and Glenburnie Fire Hall.

Guatemala Trip – KP Officer

A Kingston police constable and his wife will be travelling to Guatemala to do volunteer work at an orphanage and are asking for donations of supplies.

Guatemala is plagued by poverty and is among the top three countries in the world for child murders.

Constable David Wein and his wife will be working at the orphanage from January 23rd to the 30th.  They’re hoping people will be able to help with donations of supplies for children including toothbrushes, toothpaste and personal hygiene products as well as shoes, flash drives and school supplies.  Donations can be dropped off at Kingston Police headquarters from 7am to midnight.

Lottery Luck

A woman from Shannonville has won $2 million in the December 6th Ontario 49 draw.

Susan Fleming had been playing the same number for the past two years and says she plans to help family, get a new vehicle, do some home renovations and take a vacation.

The winner of the January 5th 35 million dollar Lotto Max jackpot says he plans to keep his job as a mechanic at a car dealership.  Jason Debattista of Brampton says he’ll also be buying his wife of 23 years with a special anniversary present…hinting it might involve diamonds.  I’m thinking he needs to come through big time with 35 million.
