Helicopter Crash

The Transportation Safety Board says evidence suggests a tool bag struck the rear rotor of a helicopter before it crashed in Tweed last week, claiming the lives of four Hydro One employees.  Investigators found a heavily damaged white canvas bag and the tip of a tail rotor blade more than 600 metres from the crash site.  The agency also says two of the three passengers’ seatbelts were unfastened and that all three passengers “became separated” from the helicopter while it was still in the air.

It has issued a safety advisory for helicopters saying cargo must be safely secured at all times and passengers who don’t wear seat belts risk serious injury or death in an emergency.

DocuPet

The controversial door to door campaign by DocuPet to get people to register cats and dogs in Kingston has been suspended.

The city says a new policy will have to be worked out.

A Kingston woman appeared at city council this week to complain about a threatening letter she got from the city to register a pet.  She told council she saw a DocuPet employee peer in the window of her home.  She says the dog the woman saw belonged to a friend who was visiting and she ignored a notice hung on her door because she doesn’t own pets.

The Kingston based DocuPet says its employees don’t peer in windows or listen at doors for pets – but the city has suspended the door to door program until a new policy can be developed.

Christmas Tree Assault

A 35 year old woman is facing charges of assault with a weapon and breach of probation after another woman was pushed into a Christmas tree and a man was attacked with a knife in Kingston’s east end.

Police say the woman has no fixed address and was visiting the couple when she got into an argument with a female resident and threw her into the Christmas tree.  The man suffered a cut to his hand when he was attacked with the knife but managed to get the woman out of the apartment and call police.

Driver Charged

The 38 year old driver of a van that crashed into two utility poles on King Street West in November has been charged with dangerous driving.

Kingston Police say they are still investigating and the man may also face a charge of impaired driving.

The van slammed into one pole and was brought to a stop by the second pole at around 1:25 a.m.

The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries and King Street was closed for most of the day while crews worked on replacing the poles.
