Snow – Driving Conditions

Kingston Police and the OPP have been asking drivers to make sure to clear snow off all the windows on their vehicles…slow down and leave lots of distance between vehicles as winter driving conditions hit southern Ontario.

Environment Canada says the Kingston area can expect 5 to 10 cm of snow today and 2 to 4 cm tonight.

401 Closed

The 401 eastbound was closed at County Road 6 this morning – near the Odessa ONroute.

A transport truck went off the highway and there was no indication this morning about the time for the highway to be re-opened.

Rogers K-Rock Centre – New Management

The U-S company that manages the Rogers K-Rock Centre has been sold to Toronto based Equity Company.  SMG Holdings has been purchased by Onex Corp. for an undisclosed sum of money.  SMG manages nearly 240 venues.  SMG is the only company that has managed Kingston’s flagship arena since it opened in 2008.  The Rogers K-Rock Centre celebrates its 10th anniversary in February.

Mohawks Election

The longtime chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Band Council has been re-elected

Chief R. Donald Maracle was elected in voting on Saturday.

He has been the elected chief since 1993.

Josh Hill, Carl Maracle, Deborah Vincent and Stacia Loft were elected as councillors.

Tree of Hope

Family and Children’s Services of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington says its Tree of Hope campaign is at the make or break stage right now.

Officials say 65 children still need gifts.

The campaign has raised $20,000 of its $25,000 goal.

It still needs the remaining $5,000 to pay for gifts for children from babies to teens.

Donations of new toys and other new items are also being accepted until Friday.

Mental Health Climb

A Queen’s University graduate student is going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for anti-stigma education at Addiction and Mental Health Services, KFLA.

Shamik Sen worked in the Cooking Connections program over the past year and wants to see the program continue.

Sen left Kingston on Sunday to travel to Tanzania where he’ll make the climb.

He has created a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to help fight the stigma of mental illness.
