Research Centre

The newest research centre in Kingston has officially opened at Kingston General Hospital.

Officials say the 4.2 million dollar W. J. Henderson Centre for Patient-Oriented Research will provide a direct link between research and patients.

The new facility is a collaboration between Kingston’s hospitals and Queen’s University and has been in the planning stage for the past ten years.

It was funded with donations, including $1.2 million from the Canada Foundation for Innovation and $1 million from the W.J. Henderson Foundation.

Kingston – Housing Starts

New home construction in Kingston is booming.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says year-to-date housing starts are almost double the total from the same period last year.

Its analysis says builders started 60 homes in the Kingston region during August, up from 38 a year ago.  The summary says apartment starts this year are at the second highest level in more than ten years due to greater demand from the aging population and students.

Fire – Baker Street

Firefighters were able to squelch flames from a working fire on Baker Street before they spread to the home.

The fire started when fuel was being drained from a boat in the driveway yesterday afternoon.

The boat, garage and a vehicle parked in the garage were destroyed.

Damage is estimated at $65,000 dollars.

There were no injuries in the fire.

Speed Kills

There’s no question people are speeding on the 401…the OPP in Leeds County – just to the east of Kingston stopped 8 drivers for going more than 50 km/h over the speed limit on the weekend.  One of them was a 35 year old Kingston man who was charged with going 66 km/h over the limit.

All eight drivers had their vehicles impounded for 7 days and their licenses suspended for seven days.

Business before Business

Members of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce were doing some Business before they went to work today.

St. Lawrence College President and CEO Glen Vollebregt is hosted Chamber of Commerce members this morning.

He discussed opportunities and challenges for the college over the next 50 years.

Killer – Gilmour Book

He was known as Killer during his hockey career and that’s the name of the new book by Kingston hockey legend Doug Gilmour.

The Hockey Hall of Famer is now President of the Kingston Frontenacs.

Gilmour played for seven teams over his 20 year career and scored the Stanley Cup winning goal with the Calgary Flames in 1989.

Gilmour will be touring to promote his book, Killer.  The promo material says it promises to bare all about his on and off ice exploits and escapades.
