Providence Manor – Layoffs

The union representing workers at Providence Manor says the home is planning layoffs as a way to balance its books so it can get a mortgage to build a new facility.

Officials at the home say that is not true – but have confirmed the jobs of six personal support workers will be eliminated.  There is no word yet on how many registered practical nurses will also be laid off.

Frontenac County – More Accommodation

Frontenac County is looking at ways to increase tourism.

A review has been completed at a cost of $50,000 and says the county needs more tourism rentals.

Consultants determined the best way to increase rentals is to encourage more bed and breakfasts, redevelopment of existing cottages, upscale camping and resorts.

County Council will be discussing what type of support it can come up with for the private sector.  It will also be asked to consider changing land use policies that restrict rental properties in certain areas.

Man Charged – Fight with Ex

Kingston Police say a 31 year old Kingston man is facing charges after he ignored his probation conditions, visited his ex and wound up fighting with her on the street.

Police say the man got into an argument at the woman’s home…punched her in the face…eventually left…but…took her phone and got into a fight with the woman on the street.

When police arrived they found both people with injuries.

The man has been charged with assault and breach of probation.

Assault – Man Charged

A 45 year old man from Lyndhurst has been charged after a man was attacked in Kingston when he went to check on a friend.

Kingston Police say the man was attacked with a blunt instrument outside a residence on Hickson Avenue around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

The victim was able to get free and called police.

The man from Lyndhurst has been charged with assault, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and breach of probation.

From Tony’s Today in History file…15 year old Jenna Lambert of Kingston conquers Lake Ontario…

It was on this day…July 19th…2006 that Jenna Lambert of Kingston became the first woman with a disability to swim across Lake Ontario.  Lambert was born with cerebral palsy and couldn’t use her legs for the swim.
