Gas Station Fire

Kingston Fire and Rescue was able to keep a fire at a west end gas station from spreading to tanks on the property.

Firefighters were called to the North Star gas station on Midland Avenue at about nine last night after heavy smoke was spotted coming from the area behind the gas station.

Nobody was injured in the fire.

There’s no information on the cause of the fire or the damage this morning.

Fire – Cloud of Bugs

A cloud of bugs led to an emergency call about a fire at a lakefront condo in Kingston.

Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to the condo at 1000 King Street West last night after someone spotted what they believed was smoke coming out of the top of the building.

Firefighters were able to determine the smoke was actually a swarm of May flies or midges.

HDH Award – Doctors

Two doctors at Hotel Dieu Hospital have won the Exceptional Healer Award.

Ophthalmologist Tom Gonder and anesthesiologist Richard Henry are the first winners of the new annual award.  It is given out by Hotel Dieu’s Patient and Family Council to doctors who practice the core concepts of patient and family-centred care.

KEDCO – Gillespie

The Interim CEO of the Kingston Economic Development Corporation has been chosen as the permanent Chief Executive Officer of the organization.

The Board of Directors announced on Friday that Donna Gillespie has been chosen out of 300 potential candidates.

Gillespie had been acting in the role for the past 18 months.

Alexander Henry – Moving

The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker that made its home in the dry dock next to the Marine Museum in downtown Kingston is on its to a new home starting today.

The Alexander Henry was moved to Picton Harbour when the Marine Museum moved to the Olympic Harbour.

It will be towed to Thunder Bay were it will become a museum.

Downie – Order of Canada

Gord Downie and Ontario native activist Sylvia Maracle of the Tyendinaga Mohawk territory will be appointed to the Order of Canada today.  Maracle will be named an officer of the Order, while the Tragically Hip front man will be named a member.   They are among 30 recipients to be honoured for leadership in supporting indigenous issues.  Downie’s Tragically Hip bandmates will the Order of Canada at a later date.
