From a record setting high temperature back to winter weather for a few days in Kingston.

Environment Canada says the high temperature yesterday was 12.6 degrees.  That broke the old record for March 1st of 10.8 set in 1983.

The colder weather will last through the weekend but a high of plus 8 is expected on Monday.

Ontario Hydro

The Ontario government is scrambling to relieve the squeeze of sky high electricity bills.

Premier Kathleen Wynne and Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault will announce a plan today that will reduce bills by 17% on top of the 8% cut in the HST it introduced on January 1st.

The plan involves paying for electricity generation contracts over longer periods.

TSN – Frontenacs

The Kingston Frontenacs lost money last year or it was the most profitable team in the Ontario Hockey League in 2016.

Financial records of 41 CHL teams has been filed in a court case involving current and former players who want to get paid at least the minimum wage for playing hockey.

TSN reports Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Limited reported a profit, of $707,488.

But it also obtained another income statement filed in court saying the Kingston Frontenacs Hockey Club had a loss of $366,611.  TSN says the relationship between the two is unclear.

The team issued a statement yesterday saying it lost $366,611 but isn’t commenting because of the court case.

Contraband – Joyceville Detention

The Correctional Service says an inmate was nabbed trying to bring contraband into the Temporary Detention Centre at Joyceville Institution on Monday.

A news release says the value of the contraband inside the facility would have been $4,700.

They’re not releasing information on what was seized because of an investigation by the Joint Forces Penitentiary Squad.

Film Festival Kicks Off

The Kingston Canadian Film Festival kicks off tonight.

The opening night features The River of My Dreams…a Portrait of Gordon Pinsent.  Director Brigitte Berman will be at the show.

The festival will wrap up on Sunday.  Documentary filmmaker and producer Mike Downie will be attending a screening of The Secret Path.   He’s the brother of Gord Downie and co-founder of the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund.

Ticket sales from the screening will be donated to the fund.
