Water Rescue

A man who was rescued from Collins Creek on Saturday was treated for hypothermia and taken to hospital in serious condition.  Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to Collins Creek around 4:30 Saturday afternoon.  The man was waste deep in the water about 300 metres north of Woodbine Road.

Firefighters brought the man to shore where he was treated by paramedics.

Child Pornography Sentence

A 45-year-old Kingston man has been sentenced to two years in prison for possession of child pornography and attempting to make child pornography.

Ali Neshat had pleaded guilty to the charges in November.  He was sentenced on Friday.

On top of the two year prison term he has also been placed on the sex offender registry and will be banned from anyplace where children can congregate for ten years.

Open Heart Surgery

Patients who have undergone open-heart surgery at Kingston General Hospital have been notified about the potential risk they face of getting a serious infection.

16 hundred heart patients face the risk due to a machine used to heat and cool blood during surgery.  KGH has been using the machine since March of 2014.

Patients have been told they have a very small risk of infection…less than one percent.

KGH will continue to use the machine because it considers the risk so low.

Walmart

There won’t be a second Walmart in Kingston.

Walmart has pulled out of a shopping centre development in the former quarry off Division Street near the 401.  The property was bought from local developer Abna Investments by Dream Unlimited.  Walmart was going to be the anchor store for the shopping centre.  The company says it is now re-evaluating the shopping centre development to try and determine how it will move forward.

101 Year Old Kingston Woman

A 101 year old Kingston woman has been honoured for her service with the Girl Guides.

Betty McAskill received her 85-year Girl Guide pin on Saturday at Trillium Retirement and Care Community.  McAskill helped get the Camp Carruthers Day Camp] property, was the first honorary life member in Kingston, and has also been awarded the Juliette Low World Friendship Medal
