Bernardo Seeks Day Parole

One of Canada’s most infamous killers and a former resident of Kingston Penitentiary wants to taste freedom.  A day parole hearing has been tentatively set for Paul Bernardo for March.

Bernardo was designated a dangerous offender with an indefinite sentence…but he is eligible for day parole after serving 22 years of his life sentence.  Bernardo and his wife – Karla Homolka were convicted in the kidnapping, rape and murder of 14 year old Leslie Mahaffey and 15 year old Kristen French.

They also drugged and raped Homolka’s sister 15-year-old sister Tammy, who died the next day.

Homolka was released in 2005.  She has remarried, has children and is living in Quebec.

PSAC Demonstration

Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada who work in Kingston have spent some time on the picket line protesting over the Phoenix pay system and a fair contract with the government.  The government employees staged information pickets outside CFB Kingston and Collins Bay Institution yesterday.  It was the day the government promised 80 thousand cases involving problems with the Phoenix system would be cleared…but yesterday it admitted 20 thousand cases still haven’t been resolved.

Cyclist Hit

Police are asking for help from the public in locating a vehicle in a hit and run collision with a cyclist.

It happened late Friday night on Bath Road near Homeward Avenue. Police say the cyclist suffered what he believed to be a broken arm and was taken to hospital by paramedics.

The vehicle was last seen travelling west towards Amherstview and a search by Kingston Police and the OPP failed to find it.  It is described as similar to a silver Honda SUV and would have a broken mirror on the passenger side.

Anyone with information on the incident is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

Brothers in Crime

Two Kingston brothers have been charged with breaking into garages and damaging vehicles in the Woodhaven subdivision.  They’re no strangers to crime – both have also been charged with breaching conditions of their probation.

Kingston Police say a citizen caught a 22 year old man at Woodhaven Drive and Evergreen Drive around 7am Saturday and held him for police.  His 18 year old brother was arrested by police in the area of Princess Street and Woodhaven Drive about 15 minutes later.

Multiple vehicles and garages had been broken into on Crimson Crescent, Evergreen Drive, Escala Crescent and Iris Crescent and some vehicles had tires slashed.

Meth Fueled Madness

It sounds like methamphetamine fueled madness was at the heart of a disturbance in Napanee that resulted in the arrest of four Napanee residents.

Police were called to a residence on Bridge Street on Saturday after a man with a baseball bat was seen running around demanding a fight.  Officers found 37 year old Corey Maxwell on the roof and he was arrested for causing a disturbance, breach of probation and uttering threats.  54 year old John Clark was arrested for causing a disturbance.

21 year old Tyler Wood and 46 year old Lisa Whittington have been charged with possession of crystal meth for the purpose of trafficking.  Wood also faces a charge of breach of probation.

RMC – Random Drug Test

Military staff and cadets at the Royal Military College of Canada have undergone an anonymous drug test.

They were informed during their morning parade on October 12th they would have to provide urine samples.

Over 12 hundred samples were collected in Kingston and RMC is waiting the results.

Officials say the surprise testing was not the result of any reports of drug abuse on campus.

And because it is anonymous it will only provide information that can be used to promote a drug-free environment.

Aunt Lucy’s Sold

The sign on the former Aunt Lucy’s Restaurant property says sold.

Commercial real estate broker Peter Kostogiannis has confirmed the restaurant and property have been sold.  He says he can’t confirm who the new owner is because the closing date hasn’t been set.

Aunt Lucy’s owner Bob Clark passed away in February and the restaurant was put up for sale in the spring.
