United Way Campaign

And the goal is….

The United Way campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington has announced the goal for this year’s campaign is $3,451,000.

It held its traditional Campaign Kick-off Breakfast this morning at the Ambassador Conference Resort.

Last year the campaign raised $3,414,000…14 thousand more than its goal.

The money was used to support 57 programs in the region.

Housing Starts

There was a dramatic drop in the number of housing starts in the Kingston Census Metropolitan area in August.

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation says 375 units were under construction in August, down from 641 in July.  The agency says total starts are down this year due to a lack of apartment construction.  It says builders are currently waiting for final approvals for a number of new projects.

Ontario – Funding Announcements

Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala has announced additional funding to help refugees settle and integrate in the community.  Kiwala announced $85,000 in funding for Kingston Employment Youth Services yesterday.  The agency says the funding will help it focus on the needs of refugee women and assist them to connect with or prepare for training, education, employment and self-employment opportunities.

Today…the MPP for Kingston and the Islands will be making an announcement about support for Kingston’s Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy.

CFB Kingston – Garrison Family Fun Fest

CFB Kingston is welcoming the community this weekend with a different take on the Garrison Family Fun Fest.  The event is taking place in the parking lot of the Kingston Military Community Sport Centre and kicks off tomorrow night with a country music concert.

The main event takes place on Sunday and features multiple military exhibits and free activities. Those activities include swimming, rock climbing and skating with the RMC Paladins hockey team.  People will also be able to take boat rides with HMCS Cataraqui and a zip line and obstacle course in the 50,000-square-foot sports dome.

Smile Cookies

Tim Horton’s will be joining staff with the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation at 11:00 this morning to deliver the first batch of Smile Cookies to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Kingston General Hospital.

The Smile Cookie campaign officially kicks off at Tims on Monday and the money raised in Kingston will be go to support the unit at KGH.
