Ontario Teachers

The only teachers union still trying to get a contract agreement with the provincial government says it will ramp up job action today and start rotating strikes in October if no progress is made at the bargaining table.  Talks between the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario and the province broke down last week.  The union rejected what it called a “cookie-cutter” offer from the Wynne government modeled on deals with other teachers’ unions.

Son Charged with Murder

A 23 year old man from Ajax has been charged with killing his father at a cottage on Cranberry Lake in Battersea.

The body of 65 year old John Watts was discovered at the cottage on Trillium Lane on Friday after police stopped a vehicle on the 401 in Port Hope at 12:45 a.m. on Friday.

They originally charged Robert Watts with a driving offence – but their investigation led them to the body and he was charged with the second degree murder of his father.

Four Arrested

Four people are facing charges after a violent break in at a home on Sydenham Road early Thursday morning.

A 43 year old man was stabbed multiple times and a 22 year old man suffered a head injury during the break-in.

The four people arrested last week appear in court today.

Police are still looking for the driver of their getaway vehicle.

All Candidates

The candidates running in the federal election in Kingston and the Islands will be attending a panel discussion at St. Lawrence College tomorrow night.

Conservative candidate Andy Brooke, Green candidate Nathan Townend, Liberal Mark Gerretsen and New Democrat Daniel Beals will be taking part in the discussion hosted by Imagine Kingston and St. Lawrence College.

The candidates will also take part in a televised debate on Cogeco from 8:00-9:30 p.m. on Wednesday…hosted by the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce.

Campaign Offices – Vandalism

Police are investigating after the windows at three of the candidate’s offices in Kingston were broken.

Police are investigating the incidents at the offices of Mark Gerretsen at 1530 Bath Road, Daniel Beals at 1305 Princess Street and Andy Brooke at 502 Days Road.  The windows were broken sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning of last weekend

United Way

Week two of the United Way Campaign in Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington is underway.

The first week wrapped up with the campaign reaching $600.000.

The goal is 3.4 million.

The $600,000 represents 18% of the goal.

Whyman – World Championships

Kingston’s town crier is off to the World Championship tournament in New Zealand this week.

Reigning world champion Chris Whyman will compete in the Central Otago World Town Crier Tournament from September 24th to 30th.  He’ll be competing against 20 other criers.

Whyman has been world champion three times since becoming Kingston’s Town Crier in 1984.
