Heat Warning

Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Kingston and the surrounding area for today and tomorrow.

Daytime highs are expected to be above 30 degrees.

It says the heat will ease up a bit on Thursday.

The warning advises people to stay well hydrated, check on elderly friends or family members to make sure they’re all right and make sure not to leave pets in vehicles.

Bedford Release

Kingston Police will go to court to request a peace bond for a sexual predator that lured girls into sex acts over the Internet.  29 year old Mark Bedford will be released from a Kingston area prison next month.  He told a parole hearing he plans to live with his parents.

Police have confirmed they will be going to court to seek specific conditions to limit Bedford’s access to the Internet when he’s released.  They won’t be releasing a picture of Bedford because they don’t consider him to be a threat to commit a crime in public places.

Stabbing and Assault

Frontenac OPP is investigating a stabbing in Verona that sent a 17 year old, 27 year old and 61 year old to hospital.

Police says paramedics were called to a residence in Verona at about 6:10 Sunday night and transports a 17 year old male and 27 year old male to hospital for treatment of stab wounds.  They’ve since been released.

Shortly after being called to the first home…paramedics were called to another home in Verona.  A 61 year old man had been assaulted and remains in hospital.

Police say all three knew each other…no arrests have been made and they’re continuing their investigation.

 Jail – Rockport Fatal

A man from Rockport has lost his appeal of a conviction for dangerous driving causing the death of a woman on the Thousand Islands Parkway.

Vincent Bennett lost the appealed in a Toronto courtroom last week and will serve a 10 month jail sentence.

He’ll be on probation for two years after being released from jail and has been prohibited from driving for five years.

Bennett’s pickup truck crossed the centre line on the Parkway in October of 2012 and hit a car being driven by elementary school teacher Sarah Yuille.

Blue Green Algae

It’s the time of the season for blue green algae according to the public health unit.

KFL&A Public Health says it is a common seasonal occurrence in waterways throughout the region.

Blue green algae thrive in warm, shallow, undisturbed water that is rich in phosphorous and nitrogen.

It says don’t use the water for drinking, food prep, bathing, showering or swimming and avoid skin contact.

Fresh algae blooms often smell like newly cut grass but the older blooms smell like rotting garbage.

Suspicious Fires

Detectives with the Napanee OPP say two fires at a vacant industrial building in Enterprise are suspicious.

The first fire took place shortly after midnight on July 12th at 1583 Lake Road in the village of Enterprise.  The vacant commercial building suffered minor damage.

The second fire destroyed the building early in the morning of July 22nd.

Anyone with information on the suspicious fires is being asked to contact Napanee OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Ferry Dock

The Amherst Island Ferry docks will undergo major improvements.

The Ministry of Transportation says the docks on the island and mainland will be rebuilt starting this winter.

Both will be changed to accommodate a front loading ferry.

The Ministry says it will allow for larger commercial vehicles to use the ferry.  There will also be improvements to parking areas as well as new buildings for operations and passengers.
