Weather – Victoria Day

The weather cooperated in Kingston and people were able to enjoy summer like conditions on the Victoria Day weekend.

Lake Ontario Park was packed yesterday with people who enjoyed a day of activities topped off with fireworks last night.

North of Kingston, a tornado warning was issued for the area stretching from Kaladar and Bon Echo Provincial Park through Sharbot Lake, Lanark County, Smiths Falls and Perth.

The warning was issued around 5:00 p.m.  By early Monday evening it had been downgraded to a severe thunderstorm watch and there were no reports of a tornado developing.

Traffic Delays

The city has issued its latest traffic and construction report and there are a couple of notable additions…starting today…expect delays on Highway 15 from the 401 to Gore Road while crews seal cracks in the road.

You can also expect delays to increase significantly on Front Road between Trail Head Place and INVISTA for bridge work and Utilities Kingston is continue work on replacing the water main on Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard at Avenue Road.

Queen’s – Noise Exemption

A report for Kingston City Council is recommending a noise bylaw exemption be extended for Queen’s University at Richardson Stadium and Miklas-McCarney Field.

The university wants the exemption from 9am to 9pm…seven days a week.

Council is expected to vote on the request tonight.

Residents of the area created an uproar last year when the university made a similar request.

Drug Bust

Two people face charges after Kingston Police seized cocaine, two 9-mm pistols and ammunition during Saturday afternoon traffic stop.

Police stopped a vehicle for speeding on Carleton Street shortly after five in the afternoon on Saturday.  A search turned up three-quarters of an ounce of cocaine, two 9-mm handguns and ammunition.

A Kingston man in his 20’s is facing a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Another man has been charged with driving while disqualified and a number of weapons offences.

Joyceville – Lockdown

Inmates in the medium security unit at Joyceville Institution started the weekend locked in their cells.  A lockdown was put in place at 8am on Friday to allow staff to conduct an exceptional search.

The Correctional Service says the search was being conducted to assure safety and security at the prison.

Kiwala – Nursing

Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala will be getting a first-hand look today at what nursing staff does at Kingston Community Health Centres.

Kiwala has agreed to take part in a Registered Nurses Association of Ontario – Take Your MPP to Work initiative.

She’ll spend two hours at the Health Centres location on Weller Avenue this afternoon.
