Ontario Budget

Kingston and the Islands MPP Sophie Kiwala says Kingston isn’t on the radar for funding under the provinces $31 billion dollar fund for transit and infrastructure.
The fund was announced in yesterday’s Ontario budget.
Kiwala says the province is aware of funding requests for projects like the bridge over the Cataraqui River and expansion of the Kingston airport….but she says those projects aren’t at the funding stage yet.

Chamber – Budget Reaction

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce has joined the Ontario Chamber in expressing concern over the budget.
The Chamber says it welcomes increased spending on transit and infrastructure but says the budget doesn’t address concerns over rising electricity rates.
The Chamber of Commerce says rising electricity prices are the number one factor hurting business competitiveness in Ontario.

Worker Injured

The Ministry of Labour is investigating after a worker at Haakon Industries in Kingston suffered a serious head injury.
The man was taken to hospital shortly after 9:15 yesterday morning.
Reports say a crate fell off a truck at the company on Fortune Crescent and hit the man.


Kingston – Robbery Charge

A 51 year old Kingston man is facing a charge of robbery in a case dating back to 1998.
The man has been charged with robbing a convenience store at 106 Sutherland Drive in October of 1998 while wearing a disguise and carrying a rifle.
The suspect fled the scene but police found items of clothing a short distance from the scene.
That clothing was analyzed at the Centre of Forensic Sciences earlier this year and that’s when the man was connected to the crime in Kingston.

Drug Arrests

A man and woman from Toronto have been arrested on drug trafficking charges in Kingston.
Police claim the 44 year old man and 24 year old woman were bringing cocaine and methamphetamine to Kingston.
Police arrested the pair when they stopped a vehicle they were waiting in the area of Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard and Terry Fox Drive on Wednesday night.
Officers seized cocaine and speed with a street value of $15,000.

United Way – New Chair

The Deputy Commissioner of the Correctional Service for the Ontario Region is the new chair of the United Way campaign for Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington.
Mike Ryan takes over from outgoing chair Carrie Batt.
Ryan says his focus will be to increase personal giving during the campaign that starts on Friday, September 11th.
