Ethan Werek
#25 LW
He’s coming. Maybe not!.
He’s committed to Boston University. Not necessarily!
He remained in Stouffville and played for the Spirit of the Ontario Junior Hockey League. in 2007-08, leading his team in scoring, and being voted ‘Rookie of the Year’.
The ‘he’ referred to is Ethan Werek, and the route, which eventually brought him to Kingston, had convoluted twists and turns extending over a 15 month time frame.
Having been claimed by the Frontenacs in the first round of the 2007 priority draft, Ethan passed on the 2007-08 training camp here to remain a member of his father’s two level Spirit during the 2007-08 season. During this period of time, and even before, Ethan was being ‘wooed’ by Boston College of the National College Athletic Association. The value package dangled in front of him - a complete four year scholarship - could not be hastily overlooked.
His dilemma remained for many months. What was the best choice for his overall future - both in hockey and education?
During the 2007-08 season Ethan maintained contact with the Fronts’ management and his friends, Taylor Doherty and Bobby Mignardi, playing for Kingston.
The option of moving to the Limestone City and signing a contract to play with the Frontenacs was ever present on the table.
Eventually, this past September, a final decision was made and, to the delight of both management and Kingston fans, Ethan slipped on the Frontenacs’ jersey and began his Ontario Hockey League career here.
When he jumps over the boards for his next shift, many fans edge forward on their seats anticipating that something positive is going to happen.
Ethan is‘widescreen’ visible in his offensive play, but he is also a tenacious checker and a nemesis to opposing power play units. He brings great energy and a smooth, long, quick stride to his game.
Ethan, feet always moving once he hits the ice, has skated into the hearts of the Frontenacs’ faithful. His style of play and determination to excel has him pegged as a major building block in the Fronts’ future - and a ‘must see’ player in other league cities.
