July 26: Warehouse Wednesdays

Every Wednesday up until July 26 between the hours of 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Kingston Symphony Warehouse, located at 785 Sir John A. Macdonald Boulevard, Unit 7A. Declutter your homes, clear out those cupboards and attics, and donate items to Warehouse Wednesdays
The Kingston Symphony’s Volunteer Committee will be accepting donations for all of their fall sales including the Vinyl Records Sale, the Fall Book Fair, the Nearly New Sale, and All Things Christmas! From all genres and types of vinyl records to CDs and DVDs, from clothing and knick-knacks to Christmas Sweaters and ornaments; we want what you’ve got. So clear out those garages, go through that old box of collectibles in your basement, pack up those clothes you never wear, and put your clutter to good use!
The donations received throughout Warehouse Wednesdays will be used for the Volunteer Committee of the Kingston Symphony’s fundraiser sales. These sales are always big hits and their success is only possible thanks to the generosity of the Kingston community. The fundraising sales run by the Volunteer Committee support the work of the Kingston Symphony Association and provide financial awards to youth studying music in the Kingston region.

July 29: German Longsword School Session

Presented by Ironwood Sword School, Kingston. Principle and head instructor: Robert MacLeod
Phone: 613-358-9642.  Web: www.irnwood.ca  Facebook: Ironwood Sword School
Children must be 8 years or older. Clothing—long pants (no shorts), shoes (no sandals). PRE REGISTRATION NECESSARY. COST: $20 per child.

Ironwood Sword School offers training in the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA). A HEMA school teaches an actual period style of fighting art based on the study of historical manuals and sources. Ironwood bases its training on the sources for the German Longsword covering roughly the medieval period from the mid 14th century to the late 16th century. The school teaches the unarmored style of fighting where the longsword is the primary weapon, but the system includes techniques for dagger, wrestling, spear, and one-handed sword. Ironwood Sword School has been offering classes since 2014. The Head instructor is Robert MacLeod who has been studying German longsword since 2008.
The introductory workshop includes a brief introduction to the period and the importance of swords to the culture followed by hands on training with blunt swords specifically designed for training safely. Children will learn how to handle a sword safely, the basics of stance and footwork, the basic cuts and guards, and a few elementary exchanges of attack and defense. Students get to practice making proper cuts on a “pell” – a wooden post with a cross piece which has been used since the middle ages. Drills are performed under supervision in pairs with the appropriate safety gear. The workshop ends with a session of “Fight the Knight” where groups of students get to attack the instructor in his full fighting kit.
