Power Outage

A power failure left a large area of Kingston in the dark last night.

The power went out at around 8:50 last night in the area bounded by Palace Road, Princess Street, Johnson Street and Victoria Park.

Utilities Kingston estimated up to two-and-a-half-thousand customers were left without power for about two hours while crews made repairs.  There’s no word on what caused the outage.

Car Surfing

Kingston Police say a man was taken to the intensive care unit at Kingston General Hospital after falling off the roof of a moving car early Monday morning. The 23-year-old man suffered serious injuries in the “car surfing” stunt.  Investigators say the man was on the roof of the car, while a second man was skateboarding while holding on to the back of the vehicle.  The vehicle is described as a green 1990’s four-door Honda Civic.

Brock Street was closed for about six hours while police investigated.

Chased Woman – Charged

A 21-year-old Kingston man has been charged after a female jogger was chased by a shirtless man calling her names.  It happened Friday night when the woman was jogging on a waterfront path near Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.  Police say the man stopped chasing the woman when she came across security officers parked in the area.

The security officers called police and followed the man.  He was arrested and has been charged with harassment by threatening conduct and breach of probation.

Drug Bust

Two men from Kingston are facing charges after police seized a large quantity of crack cocaine and powdered cocaine in a drug trafficking investigation.

Police stopped a vehicle on Friday night on Division Street and a search turned up the cocaine and a large amount of cash.  A 46 year old and a 57 year old are facing charged of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Morrisburg – Ship Aground

A ship has run aground in the St. Lawrence River at Morrisburg.

The Chem Norma is registered in the Marshall Islands as an oil – chemical tanker and is en-route to Sarnia.

The ship ran aground around 5:45 this morning.

Inspectors will be checking to determine if there is any damage to the Chem Norma before it’s towed off the shoal where it ran aground.

Walking Tours

A Kingston company is offering guided walking tours of downtown Kingston to showcase the city’s rich history.

Kingston Destination Group has announced the creation of Kingston Walks.  The tour guide uses a microphone and transmitter to tell the stories about Kingston’s history.  Guests wear a receiver and ear buds to hear the narration. The technology comes from a Kingston company called AudioConexus.

The 90 minute tours run three times a day from the Visitor Experience Centre at 209 Ontario Street.

Country Music Show

Fort Henry has announced the headliner for a Country Music Show next month.

The Chill on the Hill MusicFest on Friday, June 22 will feature Emerson Drive.  The opening act will be Lion Bear Fox.  Chill on the Hill is set on the back hill of Fort Henry overlooking Lake Ontario and Kingston.

The event will also include food vendors, two beer gardens, and a retail area.
