The Fairmont Empress in Victoria has now lifted its ban against Nick Burchill a Nova Scotia man, who 17 years ago accidentally trashed his hotel room with Seagulls and sever pounds of famous Halifax Pepperoni.

Here’s where the story begins;

17 years ago Burchill was traveling on business to Victoria, B.C. and took with him a small suitcase of Brothers TNT Pepperoni which is considered to be a Halifax delicacy which had been requested by some of his friends.  Unfortunately the room he was staying in at the hotel didn’t have a refrigerator so he laid the food out on a table near the window ledge and left he window open so it could be cooled by the chilly April air.

“And that’s when things kind of went bad,” said Burchill.  He left the room for several hours to take a walk and when he returned it had filled with dozen’s of seagulls feasting on the pepperoni.

“In case you were wondering, Brothers’ TNT Pepperoni does NASTY things to a seagull’s digestive system. As you would expect, the room was covered in seagull crap. What I did not realize until then was that Seagulls also drool. Especially when they eat pepperoni.”

Burchill also startled the birds when he returned which made them fly around the room wrecking curtains and damaging walls.  He eventually managed to encourage them to leave and asked for help to clean the mess.  His employer who had booked the room was later informed that he would be banned from The Fairmont Empress for life.

This story has a happy ending though, Nick recently returned to the hotel with a letter of apology and a collection of Brothers Pepperoni and the Empress has confirmed that he is once again welcome to stay there.   Here is the original post by Nick Burchill that has been widely shared online.   It’s worth the read!
