Weather – Snow and Ice

 

Environment Canada has issued a Snowfall Warning and a Special Weather Statement for today.  It says rain and fog will be followed by icy conditions late this afternoon.

A very strong cold front will cross the area this afternoon with rain quickly changing to snow. There may also be a brief period of freezing rain during the changeover.  10-15cm of snow is forecast for tonight with another 5cm for tomorrow morning.

 

Power Outage

 

An overnight power outage in Strathcona Park was caused by flooding.

410 customers were affected…most had power restored by about 3am but 35 customers had to do without power until around 7:30 this morning.

 

That major power outage in Kingston yesterday was caused by a problem with a switchgear at a Railway Street substation.  The outage left about 5,000 Utilities Kingston customers without power for most of the morning.

 

School Buses

 

Students who ride school buses got today off.

Tri-Board Student Transportation cancelled all school transportation for the Limestone District Board, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic Board and Hasting and Prince Edward Board.

 

Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario also cancelled all transportation for the Upper Canada District School Board & Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario have been cancelled.

 

Mayor – State of the City

 

Kingston’s Mayor has told the Rotary Club the city’s economy is on a roll.

Mayor Bryan Paterson cited progress with the Frulact plant and Feihe’s baby formula factory along with work to expand the Kingston airport in his state of the city speech yesterday.  Paterson also noted both the city and province have agreed to fund the third crossing over the Cataraqui River.

But the mayor told the meeting the city needs to work hard to develop more housing if it wants to grow.

 

Software Company Sale

 

A Kingston software company has been bought ECi Software Solutions of Fort Worth, Texas.

PrintFleet of Kingston develops software solutions for the print industry.  It will continue to operate under the leadership of President Chris McFarlane.

McFarlane says the sale of PrintFleet will help it expand its markets and continue bringing innovative solutions to the print industry.

 

Bedroom Assault

 

Kingston Police say two women fled their home in just their pajamas after a man entered their house late at night and threatened one of them. They say the victim was in her bed Wednesday night when a man she didn’t know entered her bedroom and closed the door.  Police say he threatened her with an aluminum water bottle after she asked him to leave.  The woman called out to her roommate who called 911 and both women managed to flee the house barefoot and wearing just their pajamas.  The man followed them out of the house but was restrained by two men who were passing by.  One of those men was punched.

The 20-year-old Kingston man has been charged with being unlawfully in a dwelling-house, assault, and assault with a weapon.
