Helicopter Crash – Local Deaths

 

Two of the employees killed when a Hydro One helicopter crashed in Tweed last week were from the Kingston area.

27 year old Kyle Shorrock of Inverary and 26 year old Jeffrey Howes of Bath died when the helicopter crashed last Thursday.

39 year old James Barager of Orillia was the pilot and 26 year old Darcy Jansen of Long Sault was the other employee killed in the crash.

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the crash.

Hydro One has grounded its eight helicopters until a thorough review of safety protocols and equipment is complete.

 

ATV Through Ice – Death

 

An 80 year old man from Tay Valley Township has died after his ATV went through the ice of Bennett Lake…northwest of Perth.

Police say the man had gone ice fishing and didn’t return home on Saturday.  His family saw a large hole in the ice and contacted police.

The body of Elmer Abercrombie was recovered by the OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

 

Kingston – Attempted Murder

 

A 40 year old Kingston man is facing multiple charges including attempted murder after an Access Bus driver was attacked with a knife and a woman was critically injured with a hammer.

Police say the Access Bus driver was able to fight off the man in the attack around 11:45 in the morning on December 14th.  The driver suffered minor injuries and the man fled on foot.

He was arrested about an hour and a half later after a woman let him into her home.

Police say…earlier in the day a women had been hit on the head with a hammer and suffered life threatening injuries.

 

Odessa Man

 

A 36 year old man from Odessa has been arrested almost a week after the driver of a vehicle eluded police in Belleville.

Belleville Police chased a vehicle on Sunday night, December 10th.  The vehicle was driven into oncoming traffic to avoid police and the chase was called off.

Belleville Police and Frontenac OPP visited a home in Odessa on Saturday to execute an arrest warrant.  The 36 year old man will appear in court in Belleville today.

 

Fentanyl Seized

 

Kingston Police had to use specialized gear when they encountered fentanyl during a drug bust at a Kingston hotel last Thursday afternoon.

Police seized powdered fentanyl, a large quantity of heroin, cocaine and crystal methamphetamine.  They also seized $4,300 in Canadian currency.

A 29 year old woman from Ottawa and a 19 year old woman from Ottawa are facing drug trafficking charges.

 

DocuPet

 

The number of pets licensed in Kingston has jumped by 63 per cent since the city awarded the contract for its licensing system to DocuPet about two years ago.

There were 4,250 licensed dogs and cats in Kingston in 2015…that number has jumped to 6,820.

A report for Kingston city council calls the growth in registrations unprecedented for any city program.

 

La Salle Causeway – Lane Closures

 

You can expect traffic delays on the La Sale Causeway during daytime hours this week.  Maintenance work will not only see lane closures from 9:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m…but one lane will be closed from 9:30 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon starting today and continuing through Friday.

One lane will remain open during the maintenance work and pedestrians and cyclists will be escorted across the bridge.
