College Strike – Vote Results

The result of the vote by striking college faculty in Ontario is expected today.

St. Lawrence College President Glen Vollebregt says he will announce the results as soon as possible.

Electronic voting on the offer from the colleges ends at 10 this morning.

The union representing the striking professors, counsellors and librarians has recommended its members reject the offer.

The strike is the longest in the 50 year history of Ontario’s colleges.

Peacekeeping Pledges

Canada will supply six helicopters, two transport planes and a rapid deployment forces of 200 as its commitment to U-N peacekeeping.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announced in Vancouver yesterday.

The government is also promising to spend 21-million dollars to help double the number of women deployed in peacekeeping operations around the world.

Tony McKegney – Guilty – Impaired Driving

Former N-H-L player Tony McKegney is going to be spending weekends in jail after pleading guilty to impaired driving.  The 59-year-old Kingston resident had been stopped on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory in April of this year.  He was sentenced to 30-day in jail to be served on weekends, a three-year driving ban and three months of probation.

In 2014 he was fined for operating a Sea-Doo with more than the legal concentration of alcohol in his system and in 2015 he was sentenced to 75 days of intermittent jail on weekends for domestic abuse.

Frontenac County Budget

Frontenac County will finalize its budget next month after making some cuts during budget deliberations.

County councillors agreed to spend $20,000 less to repair the parking lot at Fairmount Home and won’t contribute $6,000 to a Children’s Aid bursary program.

Council did not cut back on a contribution to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation.  It will contribute about $55,000 a year for 10 years to the Foundation.

The increase in the county budget for next year will be 3.79% if the budget is approved next month.

Napanee Pot Business

Marijuana is big business and ABcann Global of Napanee has added some heavy hitters to its operation.

The Napanee based company produces pharmaceutical-grade cannabis products.

ABcann says it is expanding its cultivation capacity and pursuing partnership and product development opportunities in Canada as well as in select international markets, including Germany…Australia and Israel.

Alcohol and tobacco marketing expert Rick Fitzgerald has been named to the company’s board of directors.  It has also appointed Dr. Michael Bumby as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO).  He’s a former pharmaceutical company CFO.

Food Basics – Riverview

Kingston’s newest grocery store opens today in the new plaza in Kingston East.

Food Basics is the anchor tenant in the new Riverview Shopping Centre.  It has created 80 jobs and is the second retail outlet to open in the mall.  Starbucks is already open.

One Roof

The Grand Opening for “One Roof” takes place in Kingston today.

One Roof is a hub of services with 16 agency partners that deliver services to youth, ages 16-24.

One Roof is located at 426 Barrie Street and the official opening takes place starting at 1:30 this afternoon.

Athlete of the Year

The Kiwanis Club of Kingston has launched its campaign to select Kingston’s 2017 Athlete of the Year.

The winner of the Gus Marker Trophy is chosen from nominations.

The Kiwanis Club says it wants as many nominations as possible from Kingston’s broad and diverse athletic community. Nominations can come from friends, family, coaches or organizations.

Past winners include Olympic medalists and athletes who have gone on to be selected to the Kingston and District Sports Hall of Fame.
