Peacekeeping

 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce today…Canada’s U-N peacekeeping commitment will involve several smaller contributions instead of one specific peacekeeping mission.  The U-N’s undersecretary general for field support says that approach is actually preferable to a single mission.

 

College Strike – Rally – Class Action

 

A group of students that staged a rally outside St. Lawrence College in Kingston will be back in front of the college this morning.  The students carried signs yesterday saying…Stop the Strike For Students Sake…Goodbye Future.

The rallies come as faculty continues voting on an offer from the colleges.  Their union is urging them to reject the offer.

 

The strike started on October 15th and now a Toronto law firm is launching a class action lawsuit on behalf of students.  It seeks full refunds for students who don’t want to continue in their program…for those who do…it says they should get refunds equivalent to the time lost during the strike.

 

Fire – Wright Crescent

 

Nobody was injured in a fire on Wright Crescent…but the fire that started in the garage caused extensive damage.

Flames were coming out of the garage of a townhouse unit on Wright Crescent when firefighters arrived around 9:30 yesterday morning.

Kingston Fire and Rescue says the garage area and the 1st floor of the home had extensive fire, heat and smoke damage. The 2nd and 3rd storey of the home were also heavily damaged by heat and smoke.

The cause is under investigation.

 

Sharps in Candy – Napanee

 

A real scare in Napanee where two children bit into Halloween candy containing sharp objects on the weekend.

Napanee OPP says they did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

Police say the candy was collected in Napanee on Halloween night.

They are investigating and are trying to track down exactly where it came from.

 

Missing Girl

 

Kingston Police is asking for the public’s help in locating a missing 14 year old girl.

Brandi Chalmers of Bath was last seen on November 12th in Kingston. She was on foot on Bader Lane off University Avenue.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Brandi Chalmers is being asked to contact Kingston Police or Crime Stoppers.

 

United Way Update

 

The United Way Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington campaign has less than a million dollars to go to reach its goal of $3,501,000.

The campaign thermometer hit $2,557,509 yesterday…73% of the goal.

The campaign ends on November 30th.

 

Salvation Army – Kettle Campaign

 

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign will be officially launched on Friday at the Cataraqui Centre.  The goal for the campaign this year is $310 thousand dollars.

The Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to staff the 19 kettle locations across the city.  The campaign will run until December 23rd.

 

Walk of Fame

 

The founder of Rogers…the corporate empire that owns this radio station…will be honoured tonight in Toronto with a place on Canada’s Walk of Fame.  Ted Rogers is being inducted posthumously along with Stompin’ Tom Connors and civil rights pioneer Viola Connors.

The gala bash tonight will also see environmentalist David Suzuki, sprinter Donovan Bailey, and actress Anna Paquin added to the Walk of Fame.
