Fire – Pickers World

 

Fire has destroyed one building behind the main Pickers World Market on Princess Street in Kingston.

Kingston Fire and Rescue was called to the wood frame structures on Princess Street across from the Ambassador Hotel just before 11:30 last night.

Flames could be seen shooting into the sky.

The former lumber yard contains a number of barn like structures behind the main Pickers World Market and the fire appears to have started in one of those structures.

There’s been no official word on the fire from Kingston Fire and Rescue.

 

Sexual Assault – Jail Time

 

A former school teacher is going to jail for eight months after being sentenced by a judge in Napanee.

The judge said if it wasn’t for Neil Joynt’s age and health he would be serving a longer sentence.

A jury found Joynt guilty of sexually assaulting two boys in the 1960’s and 1970’s during his trial last year.

 

Two Arrested – String of Break-Ins

 

Kingston Police have charged two men with four break-ins that have taken place since February 17th.

A 36 year old man was arrested after trying to escape through a window at a residence on Milford Drive.  He’s already facing charges in the break in at Dawn House that took place earlier this month.

A 38 year old man was arrested at a residence on Princess Street and along with the break in charges faces a charge of possession of crystal meth.

 

Dawn House – Fifth Person Charged

 

Five people now face charges in relation to the break in and theft from the construction site at the Dawn House Women’s Shelter on Milford Drive.

Kingston Police say a 26 year old man was arrested at police headquarters late Tuesday night and a large suitcase full of stolen tools was recovered.

He’s been charged with break and enter, mischief over $5000 and theft.

 

Lockdown – Collins Bay

 

A lockdown has been put in place in the medium security unit at Collins Bay Institution.

A news release from the Correctional Service says the lockdown and a search were ordered to ensure the safety and security of the institution, its staff and inmates.

People who have scheduled a visit at Collins Bay are being advised to contact the institution to find out if the visit will still be allowed.

 

St. Lawrence – KPI

 

St. Lawrence College continues to receive top marks from employers that hire graduates of the college. The annual Key Performance Indicator survey gives the college a 100 percent score from employers that say they are satisfied or very satisfied with St. Lawrence graduates they’ve hired.  The provincial average was 91.2 per cent.
