Rain – Flooding

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for today…rain…heavy at times…20 to 30 mm expected with a high of 5.

The Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority says it doesn’t expect any widespread flooding.

It says current conditions are typical of spring rain events.  However, it says low lying areas and other flood prone areas will experience flooding.

Inmate Murder – Guilty

A man charged with murdering an inmate at Joyceville Institution in 1994 has been found guilty.

The jury found Brian James Riches guilty of first degree murder in the death of Phong-Nien Chau.  Chau had been strangled in his cell at Joyceville.

Riches was sentenced to life in prison and won’t be eligible for parole for 25 years.

He was charged after the OPP re-opened the case and DNA evidence was found under the victim’s finger nails and several items originally collected as evidence.

Boy – Arson

A 12 year old boy has been charged with breaking into a trailer in Prince Edward County and setting it on fire.

Police say an 11 year old boy was also involved but will not be charged because he hasn’t reached the age of criminal responsibility yet.  The boys were arrested after police were called about the fire on County Road 39 outside Consecon Tuesday night.

Cat Killed

The OPP and Ontario SPCA say they are investigating an act of animal cruelty at the Parrots Bay Conservation area in Amherstview.

A person walking in the conservation area found a dead cat on Tuesday and police say it was found under suspicious circumstances.

Anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Park – Out for a Rip

A 26 year old Kingston man has been charged with mischief after a pickup truck was driving through a park on Sutherland Drive.  Police say the driver did donuts in the soft grass on Tuesday night and the park was extensively damaged.  The man was arrested after the truck got stuck in the mud and he called for a tow truck.

OPSEU Convention

The President of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union is running for re-election at the union’s annual convention.

Warren…Smokey…Thomas of Kingston has been president of the union since 2007 and is hoping to extend his term for another two years.  He is facing another candidate from Toronto.

The OPSEU Convention opens today at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
